Fan noise when car is cold?

On really cold days as soon as I start the car on the passenger side near the glove box there is a kinda loud fan shuddering noise....

It sounds like a fan...but why would it make this noise only when the car is cold?

I'm talking roughly 35-40F in the early mornings. Only happens during the winter here in CA...otherwise never does it.

Any ideas?

It's the fan that pulls air across the interior temperature sensor. The sensor is next to the sunroof switch, the fan is next to the glove box\airbag, the two are connected by a hose that runs down the passenger A-pillar. Sounds like the fan is just getting old and the bearings don't like the cold weather any longer. Once the fan ceases up, the climate control won't be able to maintain a uniform temperature in the car.

Exactly it. The Aspirator motor is what I think it is called. It was probably whinning high pitched in the summer, and just didn't notice it.

Could this explain why my car takes such a long time to cool down? and it is difficult to keep it cold?

^ What does it require to get to the fan to replace?

I would think if the fan wasn't pulling air over the sensor the car would be to cold in the summer and to warn in the winter. In other words in the summer the sensor would only be sensing the warm air at the top of the cabin and it would over shoot the requested temperature.

Have you checked the charge in you A\C?

In that case maybe its not worth it until it makes a noise all the time seeing as its only cold like 1/10th of the year here in socal.

I checked my AC and the PSI was correct...yet it still blows mildly cold...not as cold as when I first had it switched over. I'll have to look into that soon.

On a w126 420SEL it is behind the glove box.
On a w124 I am not sure. Probably the same place.
