Pic's of my son's 300e

Hello Everyone,

I'm new to this side of the forums. I'm usually pooking around the W208 side since I drive a 99 CLK320. I recently picked up a 93 300E 2.8L for my son (he's a senior now) with a 151K miles from a gal for $1K (which I thought was a steal!) she wanted to get rid the car so she could buy a Lexus she also told me that the car was not running because the battery was dead (yeah it was dead), Anyways I towed the car home bought a new battery and it started up with no problem and the altenator was charging correctly (14.1V) I did some preventative maintenace on the car oil change, air filter, serpentine belt and Idler pulley. I also replaced the smog pump because I noticed that the clutch/bearing was making a lot of noise. I still need to do the tune up but it purrs nicely. Cosmetically the car was missing the front grill and was in dire need of a paint job (the Arizona sun really beat it up). So I picked a new grill assembly from ebay and got the popular Ambassador special from Maaco (they actually did a great job on the car, but I'll let you be the judge). So here are some before and after pic's of my son's new ride. Hope you enjoy the transformation my son sure did!

wow thats awesome! Nice find and looks pretty clean with the new paint. How much did they charge you if you don't mind me asking? I actually need to get my doors redone on my 260E and it'd be nice to have a ballpark figure.

Glad to hear it runs great too. Got any history on the car?

Hi ps2cho,

Maaco did the whole car for $517 only because the car paint was so badly cracked, they had to sand down to metal, if not then it would have only cost $249.99.

Well we are the 3rd owners. First was the girls dad who bought it back in Dec 92 then he gave it to her when she graduated from high school in 99 and now us.

According to the record book it looks like her dad had it seviced regularly in Dallas until he gave it to her in 98 after that who knows?

I still plan to do a tune up and possibly change out the transmission filter & gasket with the help of my son. I have the carsoft program with multiplexer and will also do a diagnostic check.

I do have one question, when the girls father had it serviced in Dallas I noticed that the Benz service used 15w40 oil, with me living in AZ can I get away with a 10w30 or possibbly go to synthetic so I don't have to change so often?

Cheers,

Rusty

Wow, what a great deal and a transformation on the car! Those Maaco guys did a decent job.

As for oil, I would recommend a 10w-40 Synthetic, and you should be okay.

Hey, great job on the find and on the restore so far. The paint looks really good in those shots. I'm sure your son will have years of enjoyment out of this car. Will be good for him to learn a few things about working under the hood, you might create a new MB enthusiast out of him.

I looked up that paint...and it says that there is no clearcoat applied. Is that true? That price is awesome!

Absolutely switch out the transmission fluid + filter for good measure. Those are the type of things you don't want to skimp on if you have any doubt on them at all.

lots of cars
They use single stage paint. If you want a clear coat that would cost like 1200-1600.

Ouch. What would the life-length difference?

I'm thinking of maybe just getting my two faded doors done. Can't be more than $100-$150 right?

Thanks all for the comps and advice on maintenace, my son a & I are heading over to get some oil (Mobile one of course) and do the oil change later on this evening and I'll order the trans auto filter kit from KO performance shortly.

Oh yeah and Brian I., Yeah I've converted him over from being a ricer to a euro lover!

Thanks again,

Rusty

You really don't need mobil 1, just get a synthetic blend 10w-40. That's what i use.

Black would be fine as a single stage paint, just make sure they color sand it right. I would get the whole car repainted because the shade of black might end up different.

You're a good father LOL

Nice job on the car!

A note:

My MB Indy specialist tells me it is a waste to pay for synthetic for the W124's.
He builds Porsche race motors and competes in the Rolex 24hr.

He recommends Motul as a high end oil.

For my 500E, he uses Texaco Havoline 20 W50 "Dino" oil.

I wish you all the best
