Mirrors for '94 wagon, and misc Qs
So excited, I'm back in a Benz after driving a slug of a Volvo the past 2 years. I've always been in love with these wagons--they are so handsome.
Feels sooooooooooooo good. I love this car!

Only 123K, paid $2750, appears never wrecked, very clean in & out except for smallish dent below driver's mirror. MBTex in awesome shape. Has a newly rebuilt tranny w/warranty, but needs a little love.
1. "the bounce" (found instructions on this great forum and already ordered accumulators from autohausaz!)
2. new headlight bulbs (I hope--the high beams don't work at all and only one low is on)
3. muffler needs welding (friend owns muffler shop, thank goodness!)
4. broken antenna (can hear motor working, though)
5. driver's side mirror broken (probably related to dent) but tries to move when I move the knob
6. pass. mirror also tries to move but just jerks (housing is still intact)
7. new tires due soon
Main question: are wagon mirrors same as for the sedan? The guy we bought it from has a sedan w/bad engine and offered to let us take the mirrors off it (free!).
Secondary Qs:
- any easy way to get owner's manual? (this car came from auction & was empty)
- am assuming the blank display in the center of the instr. cluster is temp.? Is that easily fixed?
- what color is it? it looks like a dark metallic gray--almost black but not quite. Sorry, no good pics yet.
- anything I need to watch for on the tranny? the seller indicated that the shop that rebuilt it was not familiar with these cars.
Thanks!
722.4? Any ideas why it was rebuilt so early? Other than overdrive going out, these transmissions rarely go bad...so if the rebuild was purely to fix OD, just keep the filter fluid changes on time (30k) and you should have no problems.
Mirrors are the same. They are heated so make sure cables are in properly.
You can swap antenna w/o having to replace entire unit, but it can be tricky winding it back in. Pretty straight forward though.
Don't understand 2nd question...Are you saying there is a hole? If so, yes it is the Climate control unit CCU.
Plan to change ALL fluids, even if there is history, or at least in my opinion. Without history, that's a given for any car purchase though.
The blank I'm talking about is a tiny square display below the speedo that I thought looked like the ambient (outdoor) temp display in my '02 W210 E430. But nothing shows there now, so I wan't sure.
On the tranny, the guy I bought it from said he didn't notice the car had a hitch on the back until after he bought it, and then found out it had no reverse, so he had to rebuild to sell it (there went most of his profit!). He figured somebody messed it up pulling something, although my friend said its smaller than a std hitch--more like for a bike rack. Not being that familiar with this model, I'm not entirely sure how the tranny performs--my '02 was smooth as silk all the time--this one almost feels like its slipping slightly when not under full throttle. I just want to be sure it doesn't need adjusting while u/w.

If its slipping first make sure the fluid is good and then make sure the vacuum modulator is correctly adjusted -- there is an absolute correct # based on which transmission 722.4xx. It should not be done "by feel". I remember a thread over @ peachparts.com with the correct vacuum specs if you search. If it is still slipping after this, it may be safe to say the friction disks are worn although it seems strange if reverse went out, they did not replace all the friction disks. My money is on the vac mod.
2. new headlight bulbs (I hope--the high beams don't work at all and only one low is on) You should be able to see a break in the filament if held up to light. New bulbs should tell you if the problem is the bulb, wiring, or switch.
3. muffler needs welding (friend owns muffler shop, thank goodness!) Is it cracks in the pipe or holes? Rust holes may mean the muffler needs replacement.
4. broken antenna (can hear motor working, though) Like psycho said, there is a replacement mast that saves you from buying the assembly.
5. driver's side mirror broken (probably related to dent) but tries to move when I move the knob This sounds like the mount to the mirror glass is disconnected or broken. Try to push on it to snap it in. If the mount is broken it's easiest to replace the assembly. Sedan mirrors interchange but early mirrors ('86 ~ '89) don't have the heat pins.
6. pass. mirror also tries to move but just jerks (housing is still intact) Same as above
7. new tires due soon Check the wear tabs
* am assuming the blank display in the center of the instr. cluster is temp.? Is that easily fixed? Easily replaced, there are 2 pin types I've seen, I have spares if you don't want to buy new
* what color is it? it looks like a dark metallic gray--almost black but not quite. Sorry, no good pics yet. Likely pearl black, there's a color code above the radiator but you have to find the code chart to decipher it. A paint shop may be able to tell you or you can do a vin check
* anything I need to watch for on the tranny? the seller indicated that the shop that rebuilt it was not familiar with these cars. So why did the seller let them rebuild it?

Can you explain the pin for the outside temp gauge? Is the part I need on the outside or in the instr. cluster? I really miss that and would like to replace if its not too spendy.
Good news, the muffler only needed a little welding and the car is nice and quiet now.
Found the manual in with the spare tire! Regular service records, yea! The car was a 1-owner until 2007, then apparently bounced from dealer to dealer, maybe due to tranny issue. (wondering if they just kept sending it back to auction to unload it when they discovered it had no reverse). Found an electrical connection for whatever they were pulling. Can't open the right side of the cargo area where the logo is for the manual and first kit?

Ordered new Osram headlight bulbs from Peter B. (from link on this forum).
Did I say I love this car!

Got an antenna mast, will try installing this weekend. Wondering if anyone has any tips for helping the seatbelt wind back up? I keep getting it caught in the door.

So sad, I had a beautiful black MB fleece blanket that would have matched this car perfectly, but we left it in the football stands last month. Guess I'll have to hunt for one--we got this one using my BofA mastercard points.

The tow connector is for running and brake lights on the trailer.
The right side panel opens up the same as the left side with the latch. The two spring loaded latches either gets stuck or the rods break. Pull back the latch with some force and pull on the panel. You should find a jack, tools, first aid kit, and access to the wiper water bottle and antenna.
