Strange shifter issue, any ideas?

Automatic 92 300e. The Shifter has always been kinda lose and ive noticed that during cold weather I have to put it into neutral to start it. During hot days it works fine starting the car in park. I'm thinking I need to just get the shifter tightened... Has anyone heared or have had this issue?

Check under the car and make sure the gear change linkage is all tight.

it's a common issue. you need to replace the hard plastic shifter bushings.

hth,

When you say bushings are you refering to the whole shifter unit minus the shifter knob?

they're visible from under the car. the shifter knob need not be removed.

The OES one is for the shifter bushing at the shift knob inside the car.

The Febi one is for the shifter linkage at the transmission.

Or, that is how I believe it to be. I have the OES one on my shifter. Never saw the transmission one.

You are correct. I just put a new shifter bushing on my 300TE's since it was out....It was completely missing.

There are two Febi one's. One below the shifter, accessible UNDER the car and the other one on the bracket that connects to the transmission itself.

A little tricky to make fit, so soak it in boiling water first to make it easy on yourself.
