'94 e320 power window lifter piece broke!

...and I know someone has gone thru this before.

The rear passenger side power window broke when my son's hand was accidentally rolled up with it and he pulled that window down like a lumberjack swings an ax. When we made sure he was OK I attempted to roll the window up and we heard an incredible sound that sounded like a gunshot coming from inside that rear passenger door. The window then fell down slowly with no resistance and the power switch was rendered useless.

I have since taken that door apart to see what happened and found that the piece that connects the window to the 'vertical window lift track' has broken to pieces, as shown in the picture. The power motor still runs when the switch is pressed and the cable runs out and retracts, but the motor does not sound real steady and strong, rather a bit 'lurchy'. I would love to get away without an entire motor change but doubt that it's possible... Any help with guidance as how to proceed with replacing the motor (and the broken piece) or somehow getting my current motor to do the job would be nice. Or maybe do I need the whole apparatus (motor, cable, 'vertical window lift track')?

Thanks for having a look at this...

I just had the same thing happening on my daughter's car, in her case it was both rear windows within the las 2 months. All you need as an window regulator, without the motor, something like this:

http://www.thepartsbin.com/catalog/index.php?N=1668 11207 4294963371 9331&No=10&Npp=10

(copy and paste the entire line)
Look at the very bottom of the list. I bought mine at a local junk yard for $20 each, with motors. Replacing them is easy, took me about 40 minutes total per door, including taking off the door panel.

Here is another source for a used one:

thnx for your input. I hope you are right...

Do you think the motor may be OK in spite of the way it sounds? Is the regulator able to make the motor run 'lurchy'?

I'm trying to be sure I fix this right the first time as I'll probably get parts from the internet...

Most likely your replacement regulator, whether new or used, will be with a motor attached, so it'll take care of your motor worries. Here is another source. I've seen regulator w/motor for $126 here:

And here:

I see what you mean and would feel better about replacing the motor, too... and before ordering from the site you listed, I checked out ebay and found the same item (regulator with motor) for $75 with shipping. You help was invaluable for me to know what to search for...

Your advice has given me the confidence to fix this and save the $500 estimate I got from a local repair shop here in Studio City, Ca.
thnx again!

lots of cars
It's a piece of plastic that goes in the bottom. I've fixed mine for $10 but it's a lot of work to remove it.

Side note on this. Don't close the door while putting the window up. If you do it will jump its position on that little clip and you have to take the cover off to reset it in its proper position. Had to do it twice on mine.

this has happened to both windows on my driver side!!!

Does anyone know if I can use the same plastic repair kit on the front window as in the rear window?
