To update my grill on a 87 w124...

From what I have noticed there are about 4 or 5 grills to choose from. The particular grill i am interested in happens to be the Advantguard grill.the one that sets recessed into the front of the hood. Now am I correct to assume that I have to get the 94-95 Update attatchment for the hood to make it fit onto my 87? If so where can I purchase the 94-95 Update attatchment I ordered the sport grill from ebay with the BIG star in the middle of the grill just to see how it changes the appearence of the car. I will post before and after pics if anyone is interested.

Thanks

Mike

Here are some grill options that I found.

Style 1 - AVANTGARDE:

Style 2 - MHW:

Style 3:

Style 4 - SL Look -Grill:

5- WALD
BILLET INNER GRILL

I don't have a pic for this grill on a car. If someone does please post a pic!

S600 INNER GRILL

You can do the 1994 1995 Hood/Grill conversion like in the picture below or buy a used hood/grill from a salvage yard.

Before you do the conversion of the hood ('86-'92) go and get yourself a '93+ hood from junk yard or ebay and install the grille you bought. To put on the conversion kit and then prime it and get a new paint job, you can just replace the hood, and if you are lucky you might even find the right color. Mechanically the 93+ hood fits the '86-'92's.

Does no one make a grill for the 1992 W124 with a grill suround without a whole for the hood emblem? Preferably with the Star in the center?

You can get a cap to plug the hole in the grill surround. Some use wald, some use a benz cap thats flat but has a logo, like the newer benz that dont have the hoodstar. Or, Im sure someone could fill/match the hole with some sort of compound and paint.

Don't bother

Just remove the grille, slide off the chrome, paint the thing black, reinstall the chrome, and then reinstall the grille on your car. It will look great! Those aftermarket grilles are junk. I tried 2 different vendors and both came broken in shipping. The small fins that hold the thing together are way too fragile. They also don't connect as well as OEM and tend to slap around when you close the hood. One other thing I noticed is that they don't keep things out of the engine area as well as OEM.

They look nice in a picture, but I think they are junk.

Black OEM looks great!

I'm going to be doing a mix and match to see what combo I like...
Having a Wald EX replica spoiler painted shell gray to match the cladding along with painting the bumper inserts.

Have a new OEM chrome grille surround and the old one will be painted signal red body color ala AMG.

One OEM grille insert will be painted black, the other shell gray.
I leave one set of strips chrome, paint the other red, gray, black whatever looks the best.
Will mix and match OEM shell and OEM inserts along with a S600 insert to see what I finally like !!!
DIY is the way to go !!!

How to remove my grille insert?

With all this grille-swapping going on here, surely some of you guys can tell me how to remove the grille insert from my 1987 300E.

I'm not planning anything drastic--actually I want as close to original as possible. However, the black on the insert is fading/peeling to light gray, and the chrome is completely gone from the 3 horizontal and 1 vertical trim strips on the insert.

I want to remove the insert (the chrome surround still looks OK), spray-paint the insert flat black, attach some new chrome strips off eBay for like $24 (unless you all know of a cheaper source) and reinstall the insert in the grille. I think what I am planning is identical to what Shin did above, and my desired end result is to have my grille look just like his.

Step-by-step instructions for an idiot would be most helpful...

First open your hood....
Remove the nut at the top center that holds the MB emblem on and also a screw in the center bottom of the grille shell.
Should be two? clips on each side that you push off.
Insert should come out.
The chrome strips will slide off of the insert.

Ok so I need a cap for the top of the grill to remove the star. Where can I get one and wouldnt there then be two of those little flush mount emblems on there? I was thinking of getting the grome removed and having the holes filled and just painting the body color. I would love to find a grill insert with the new star in the center of the grill but I cant find one. Also how much do yall think it would cost to de-crome fill in the holes and paint the suround, what would be a reasonable price for all of that?
