I have the 3.2 liter and it burns about a quart approximately every 3-4 thousand miles. is that normal?

W210 cars:
we've got two diesels and one gasser in the family. None of them consume any measurable amount of oil during the oil change interval. All cars running a 229.xx oil.
Others have found that running crappy oil for years causes ring sticking problems and elevated oil consumption.

In the past with my old 1986 124 and my fathers 126 did need 1-2 Quarts between Oil changes I recall. They were both high mileage motors with small leaks. I do not think it is that bad as long as it dose not increase much. Are there any leaks? a small drip over 5000-10,000 miles adds up.

My 430 burns no noticeable amounts of oil. In 6k miles, I've added maybe an 1/8th of a quart, and thats because it was a little underfilled at its last oil change.
However, I would not be terribly concerned with 1quart in 4k miles.

For high oil cosumption these was a tsb to replace a rubber gasket in the area of the M.A.F . It's been a while since we have done any, but anybody that had concers with oil consumption have never come back.
Go see your local dealer, they should know.

Do you drive short distances?
Do you drive a lot of stop and go?
Do you accelerate liberally?
If you answered yes to any of the questions above, then it shouldn't be a big deal that you're burning a bit of oil.

My oil report. I had my oil changed with a synthetic blend back in May this year at 155,000 miles. I use Firestone for this procedure because they are good and the price is about $60.00. The sticker they put on said it was due again at 158,000 miles or in 3,000 miles. For whatever reason I didnt change it again until the other day at 161,000 miles because I had nothing better to do that afternoon. I added a whopping "zero" quarts to my car during that time. Now, I do check it often but found no need to add even a drop..................... Is that weird or what?? A 10 year old car with 161,000 miles not using even a 1/4 quart in 6,000 miles??? ![thumbs](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/thumbsup.gif)
PS: My car does not drop one drop of any fluids of any kind EVER! I believe this car is possessed!![devil](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/smilies/devil.gif)

burning oil would be related to
valve seals
piston rings
first would be of course to check for all leaks, head gasket, valve cover gaskets, etc.
another thing with high mileage, could try a higher viscosity oil to see if it still burns oil, before tracking it down to valve seals, piston rings....
also a good Seafoam treatment might help

My 98 430 has been belching black smoke (not a lot, just enough to be seen) on startup for a while now, but my indy told me to ignore it. I get my oil changed every 4-5k miles and never had a problem with it.
I have 105k miles on it and am at about 4k miles on the last oil change. I do alot of highway cruising and very little around town driving in it.
I was up in Boston this weekend and the highways were clear, so figure 75-90 mph for 5.5 hours in each direction. about 30 minutes from home after driving 5 hours straight my car popped a "Oil at minimum level" messsage. Never seen it before. Stopped at a rest stop for 10 minutes and when I restarted the car the message was gone and did not reappear for the rest of the drive.
Thoughts? Recomendations?

I am burning about 1.5q or so every oil change (10,000 miles or what the FSS says). I am approaching the 100,000 mile mark. Dealership looked at it multiple times and indicating it is "normal". They did replace some seals, including the pan seal twice.
