For those of us with kids and a mortgage, what would be a good, inexpensive starting point?? (as I'm also the proud owner of a new to me 99 E430)

Modifying your E430 is pointless and costly. You will lose 100% of the money you spend on mods, if you don't put it back to stock when you sell the car, and resell your mod parts.

i have a lorinser/fortech charger on my 320 v6 --- its ok but not like an amg of course-but i can drive it with 11l/100km if i dont press it this is not possible with a v8 5.5 - but in the us gas costs are secondary i belive

Neither is an E36 4door M3.
I would say get an M5, E55, or something like a corvette.

One of my other cars is an M3 which I love and have owned for the past 14 years, I may never sell my car as I'm accustom to buying cars that I have a passion for, this is the first car that I have bought for my self since the purchase of my M3 and was hoping that I could get maybe 325-350hp/315-325tq

Now,we go from being regaled with every story in the world about killing everything from porches to M cars to Audis with there tractor engines at speeds beyond 163 mph in a 6banger with some HA mods,to Dissing the marque as
"Mercedes are unreliable, and have poor interior quality."
Tommy please do us all a great service and find that pastel blue tractor engined Audi S4
quickly so we can visit the S4 forum and continue having a good laugh daily when you wow them with you tales of legerdemain and how many poc mercedes you killed that day.
Just make sure the little old lady in the silver E320 is not doing her nails and drinking a latte at the same time so she gives you a fair chance

First of all, a 2.7L motor doesn't have enough torque to be an efficient tractor. Secondly a 2.7L s4 is one of the most feared sedans on the road for having limitless power, and having a very liner power band. Stage 2 s4's can put down 300AWHP after a 25% drivetrain loss = 375bhp. Its N-O-G-A-R-O blue btw, but I can understand someone on medicare being short on vision. Anyway, I will be sure to get the pictures to you as soon as I get the car and then we can meet up and make a video of your E320 vs my S4 and post it on youtube for everyone to see.

just read your last post,if and if you can ever afford a stage 3 s4 and you mod it real ricey,as you are sure to do,I have no worries. Either you will blow it up or reck it before I could ever drive all the way back to my childhood street racing haunts.

As far as the 2.7t B5 S4 goes you just about know Squat. Having been in the S4 Tuning business for the past year and a half with SSP Tuning, I can tell you that a 2.7t with the proper mods will not only trounce any AMG/ M but also high end super cars. http://youtube.com/watch?v=aWviVmRykPI
Our shop is working with a highly similar setup on a sedan but with more powerful tuning.
Mercedes are unreliable, I have one, and know a good number of people that own them as well which have nothing but problems. Maybe this is changing as of recent times due to Mercedes investment in quality, but the general consensus is that for the past decade these cars have been highly problematic. Out of all people you should know that the fake Mbtex leather and and plastic "wood" trim in your car is not quality
