What did I drain by mistake
Attempted an oil change on my 2000 E320, jacked it up and found a plug towards the middle left flat bottom on what I think is the oil pan. Flat pan with some groves in it. Could not find a plug at either end of the pan and assumed this had to be it. Removed the plug and let it drain. Looks and smells like oil but only about 1 quart drained and then it stopped. So I put the plug back in.
Checked the oil level and it is down but I didn't check it right before so I don't know if it is down from what I just did.
So, now I'm wondering and concerned that I screwed up. There's no way to check the transmission level but this doesn't look or smell like tranny fluid. What went wrong. I'm afraid to drive the car now.
Appreciate anyone's help.

Sounds suspiciously like a transmission pan, and it was probably 2-3 quarts. What color is the fluid?
To get to the oil plug you remove the plastic belly pan, and the plug is on the side of the oil pan.
If it is tranny fluid, you will need to replace it with MB fluid from the dealer.

What did I drain by mistake
Now that I have looked at again and I did not remove the plastic belly pan I suspect it is tranny fluid. I'll head to the Dealer, where's the location to add it?
Thanks

You
change the oil, through the dipstick tube with an oil evac tank about 50 bucks,
you dropped the trans fluid.2000 you do not have a torq converter drain so you emptied the 722.6 trans pan.It needed to be drained anyway, just don't drive it until you replace the fluid.Dealer only or autohausaz.com . Do not use regular atf you will kill the trans. You break the tab on the trans tube and with a small funnel add the fluid through the trans dipstick tube,You will need to buy the special dipstick to measure the critical fluid level.Diy on benzworld.org w210 diy section or mercedesshop, com.I have the dipsticks delivered price $42 ,if you drop the pan to change the filter I have the pan magnet $5.
sorry you made the mistake ,but if you don't drive it .Like I said the trans fluid needed to be changed ,more than the oil.
If in the future you don't know what to do on a diy.AskYou could of if you drive the car fry the trans.PM me if you need more info.
pm anyone on the forum that has done the fluid change.
Good luck

I really appreciate the response and help. Went to the Dealer and bought the tranny fluid, $17.00 per quart. Since I had not dumped the drained fuild they suggested just pouring it into quart measurements to determine how much needed to be replaced.
They gave me a replacement cap for the tranny tube and explained how to add fluid. It was so nasty I did think it was oil.
Ohlord, you are right, the fluild needed to be replaced anyway. So tomorrow I'll do the oil change correctly and fill the tranny.
Thanks again for everyone's help. Happy Thanksgiving!

Without
the torque converter drain on post 99 models 722.6 transmission.look up my diy on benzworld.org w210 section or the modified method another member did a diy based on my info and we now affectionately call the YUMLING method.
it will take more fluid but you will drain all the old fluid out and the torque converter will be cleaned out also.
You will need the dipstick for the total change.Getting the level dead on is very important.Autohausaz.com has the filter and fluid and since it is over $50 order shipping is free.

Your 99 E55
is the easy process since you have a drain plug on the torque converter you can drain both the pan and the TC and replace the filter and fluid.I have the special dipstick and DIy instructions and autohausaz.com has the fluid and gasket and filter.
Yes your transmission will love you for it.If you do not diy do not let anyone talk you into flushing the 722.6
other good info on fluid change on mercedesshop.com resource section diy articles. They also have other good diy's pertaining to the w210.

I would opt to take it to the dealer, have them drop the pan, replace the filter, and install fluid to the proper level. The system takes 5 Qts. my (01). The later converter can not be drained. The pan bolts need to be torqued overtightening, can warp the pan = (leaks). If you are not confident dont attempt things.
