01 W210 carputer
So, I'm playing with the thoughts of installing a carputer in my facelift w210.
It will have a touch sensitive screen (~d-din) mounted in the same location as an original comand (I only have audio 10). The computer will have to be placed under the seat or in the trunk or something..
It will also feature an auxiliary input, memory card input and usb input probably located in the center console storage compartment. Maybe I'll add a cd-player...
All that should actually be no problem at all... BUT! CAN-bus.........
I will NOT do this unless I am able to control the carputer (running windows media center or similar) like a windows keyboard with my steering wheel controls (volume up/down, next/previous track/radio channel) AND display information in the display in the instrument cluster..
So, any ideas about this?

Can't find any useful information, but maybe someone here may so...

Oop's I was talking on the phone when I posted and neglected to add the link.
I don't know if its applicable to the W210 or not but the guy seems knowledgeable.
Lets try this one more time.....

I'd integrate all that nice programing he did with http://www.dragontalk.com/
and talk to the steering wheel
if I felt in the moodI would name it HAL2009
"HAL.
"What,ohlord?
"HAL,turn slightly to the right and go right at the next intersection.
"Okay, but first would you like me to sing Old McDonald had a farm?
"No HAL,just steer the friggin car

Or maybe a unit from this website

Another alternative is a functinable single din player (WITHOUT screen) which fits the interior.. I have yet to see one... Anyone know of anything? It must have either auxiliary, usb or sd-card input and support the steering wheel controls...
I'm planning on a trip to Germany by the next month to pick up a facelift 55AMG. In that car a comand system is simply not good enough..

So I have decided to tear apart the can bus and make it work with a windows computer.
To begin with I have ordered a CANUSB unit to communicate with the can bus, and a lilliput double din 7inch touch screen is on its way. I also have to find a usable GPS receiver compatible with usable GPS software, a DAB/FM radio receiver and probably some new amplifiers. To begin with I will just use my laptop and run all the sound through my comand unit. Mounting of the system depends on final size and shape, but I hope I can fit it somewhere "invisible".
I have also made myself a custom subwoofer in the floor
not complete yet, but mounted and functioning, completely out of the way.If anyone want to participate in this carputer project, please give me a shout.
NOK 0 if I do a rebuild of a car already registered in Norway for ten years. So I think I'll go for that... or just cut out the chassis number from another car and weld it into the 55 and say it has been rebuilt
Anyhow..
I had a look around the internet and suddenly I have bought myself a car entertainment system......
Zotac IONITX-F-E mainboard with integrated intel atom N330 (2x1,6GHZ) CPU and intel ion GPU and a VOOM-PC black case with DC-DC Powersupply... I'm uying myself a new harddisk for my almost new laptop and put my 250GB laptop disk into the carputer. I also have some ram laying around, probably put 2GB PC2-6400 into it. any more is just not worth it on a 32bit system.. Don't think I will be running 64bit..
I bought a GPS receiver from chinavasion, maybe not the best one out there, but definitely worth a shot considering the price.
7inch ddin touch screen is on its way.
Was that it? guess so.. just have to find a siutable radio receiver compatible with whatever software I'm going to use. Have just downloaded a demo version of centrafuse 3.0. installing right now..
I also have to find me a small amplifier so I can get sound out on my speakers as the code 810 BOSE amp only have power inputs..
