Help please! Question about MAF and Cats, Ohlord!

My 2000 E430 4M has a rattling cat converter and yesterday it started bogging down upon acceleration. My indy mechanic tells me I need a new MAF and passenger Cat. My question, can the MAF be cleaned? and where is the best place to get a replacement MAF and Cats. Thanks guys.

Why does

he say you need a new MAF?Is it showing the typical maf codes of p0100 range or the p0170 and p0173 out of range codes?
Clean it per the diy on w210 section benzworld diy area. With crc brand mass air sensor cleaner.Do it before or after you have a cat spliced in ,eastern cat will have a oe universal unit that will run about 50 bucks.Racepages.com or magnaflow also have units to fit the application.Any good custom exhaust shop
(not the big chain stores) will be able to splice in a universal cat that will do the job and pass smog.
The cat being blocked is causing the bogging down.

The catalytic converter rattle is most likely the rear converter. The rears tend to go out first at about 80K. Check with Eastern Catalytic regarding a universal replacement for the rear. Cost:$50~$60.A muffler shop can easily cut and weld. Alternative: a complete direct fit assembly $350~$500.

As for the MAF sensor, a replacement Bosch insert is available from All European (www.alleuro.com) for $110. Their part number is 999.094.00.48.
Alternative: OEM complete assembly approx $300

An insert for

100 bucks is a chinese fake not bosch don't use it.Bosch real inserts are going up in price but you can get a real bosch maf the whole thing for about $160 free shipping from www.autohausaz.com
no need to pay 300 bucks

even germanstar.net with the bosch insert is now 140 bucks plus shipping, for 24 more dollars just spring for the whole unit at autohausaz.com free delivery if cleaning does not clear the check engine light(if it is even on)
Don't you have your own obd2 scanner yet?
they only cost $45 and will save you a ton of money the first time you don't need to go to a shop to figure out what you could have figured out your own self

The MAF insert is not Chinese fake. Genuine Bosch, made in Germany, marked with Bosch P/N mfg. # F00C262032. Verified genuine by engineer where I work..Robert Bosch LLC.

Whyen it comes to manufacturing, Bosch pretty much is a Chinese company anyway now:
http://www.bosch.com/content/language2/html/2222.htm

more employees there than in North America

THe fakes

come with fake bosch numbers. The link you provided the part is not 100 bucks or 110 bucks ,it is the same price as germanstar $139 so it is probably real, but you pay shipping.

I doubt the op's maf is bad,it is having trouble keeping up with the signals coming from the o2 sensor that is trying to keep up with the rattling cat
Any obd2 codes,OP?

That is the issue at hand.

The minor issues of fake $100 inserts and that real bosch complete mass air sensors are not $300.They are only $164 delivered is merely a side bar.And a clarification about real mass air sensor prices For the OP's car if he should find the need for one after cleaning his installed unit.

Replace both

Replace both cats (driver and passenger side) while you are at it. If one goes the other is probably not far behind. A good welder at any local muffler shop can splice them in for a one hour labor charge. I had mine spliced in and it only took 40 minutes total time for both.

Thanks for all the input guys! I do not have an OBD2 Scanner, but I will get one. Am I correct in saying that the E430 has 2 cats per side? front and rear? I will clean the MAF and have the shop weld in the 4 cats. Or should I buy the direct fit replacements for $350-400/side? Thanks again for all the advice.

I just called Eastern Catalytic and they dont list anything for an E430 let alone a 4Matic. Anybody know the inlet/outlet size for the V8 or the part number?

Thanks

They list a universal for the E320 4Matic, would it be the same for E430?

I think this is the Cat that fits the 4Matics. I will be ordering today and keeping my fingers crossed. It is Eastern Catalytic part no 70362.

You can

also check www.racepages.com or call eastern cat for the app.

If the one you list above is the close angle any good exhaust guy will be able to adapt it.

Ohlord, and other gurus, I went to Harbor Freight today and got the scanner.

Results:

P0100 Pending
P0300
P0302
P0303
P0304

Do the P03's correlate with a plugged pass side rear cat?
I have cleaned the MAF sensor with CRC cleaner
Eastern cat rear converters will be spliced in on Tuesday
Anything else?

P0100

maf can't keep up.P0300 except for plug #1 all the others on the pass side are misfiring from the bad cat.
