Sunroof won't open

98 e320 sunroof pops up, but wont slide open. Does slide open about 2 inches, then makes a crunch noise and stops. Anyone know how ot fix these?

Close sunroof all the way. Then push up on it to pop it open and hold it for about 5 sec. It will reset itself.

If it won't reset, and it's physically hitting something in the track (crunch noise), you'll need to remove it. Put it in the up position, remove the plastic accordion blinds on the left and right side, and remove the 6 screws that hold it to the frame. Put a blanket on the roof of the car behind the sunroof, push up on the glass, and set it down on the blanket.

Now look into the hole and see what the obstruction is. Probably something is in the track or a part is broken.

Sunroof

When you say pop it up, then hold it, am I assuming you are saying to open it by popping it up, then hold the pop up button for 5 seconds, or the actual sunroof? Is that all it needs is a reset?

That is correct. Fully closed. Push the button so it pops up. Hold for like 5 sec and it will reset itself.

Crunch !

Tried the reset. Open about an inch, then sounds like a chain when it falls off a bike. Looks like I will have to take it apart on a nice sunny day. Any tips?

TAKE OFF THE SHADE OR COVER UNDER THE ROOF COMPLETELY. THAT USUALLY PUTS A STOP TO THE SUNROOF FREEZING.

You will need

to determine where and what is binding. Dirty track or loose frayed cable.

if sunroof tracks are just needing lube and clean

Rob
I finally found a link with a very valuable hint,, I see that most roof problems are almost the same,, whitch will open 2 or 3 inch then cracking noise will happen,
All I did was toi force open the foof all the way to full position and I found 2 (small doors) one on each side and held in place with a small screw ,, took the door off ( I took many pictures and not sure how to upload them on here for every one to see)
cleaned the cable, lube and reinstall the doors and added another (extra) support screw .
now the roof is working better than new,,
please let me know how to attach the picture to my comments,,
Good day
