Cadilitic Converted 2001 E320 needs repair

Got some bad news from a mechanic I went to today. He said that my 2001 E320 needs new catalytic converters (right and left side) and oxygen sensors. The car is starting to make a noticible rattle type notice when it's running.

The mechanic wanted $3700 for the install job; which was pretty high to me--and I really am having a hard time justifying putting that kind of money into a 9 year old car. I also found out that he inflated his Service B price to $400, whereas I could have taken the car to the MB dealer and had the same service done for $298.

Anyone know where I can get this job done reliably for much less? I am really tight on money with this tough economy. I am in Northern California--near Napa.

A lot of muffler shops also do CC. Just make sure it is CARB (California Air Resources Board) approved to pass SMOG in Cal. Shop around. Indie is way high.

You could do your own

B service for under $100 next time.
You can also install universal cats from makers such as magnaflow for under 5bills both sides
Or complete units both sides for under a grand r/r.
Info and part numbers over on www.benzworld.org w210 forum
Find a different shop
He is ripping you.

When I first read the topic "Cadilitic converted..." I thought it was a w210 that had a Cadillac-related conversion of some sorts... hehe, all along you really just meant catalytic converter!

Check places like Autohaus or Formymercedesparts for better prices. You did not mention your skill level with DIY repairs. Also check your local MB club for guys that are set up with tools and willing to help do a repair. It might be worth joining the club for that alone and you will make new friends as well.More info and we could help better. ask Oh lord for contacts in the Northwest area where you are He seems fairly well connected and may be able to connect you with some help. There are forum members all over CAl.

Thanks...

Thanks for all the suggestions. I appreciate all of the help.

I can't spell. I should have typed, "Catalytic Converter."

I don't think I'm skilled enough for a DIY job without some training.

The nameless mechanic who was trying to rip me off said that I needed both right and left converters replaced as well as new oxygen sensors.

I'm wondering now if I really need just one side repaired and if the existing oxygen sensors can be re-used? Or is it better to just replace the sensors when you do this job?

Don't let him fool you

Go to other muffler shops and get a universal installed and since the car uses 4 converters, your should be fine with 2 magnaflows. I just got one replaced I paid $130.00 installed...

Yes but

you are not in California like the OP is.
He needs CARB cats.
No universals will be rated CARB.
AS of now.
He can diy
$550 a side complete bolt in units per side.
DIY on www.benzworld.org w210 forum
or find a shop to have it installed.
O2 sensors are 100000mile replacement items.

I'm having this exact same issue with my 2001 e320 I was told you can't use after market cats on this model Benz... I know that's not true. My only issue is I live in Texas right now but I'm moving to Cali next year. Will my car not pass there if I replace the cats with aftermarket here? What after market do you Guys recommend?
