I finally got the clear side bumper lens from Frank over at mbnz.org.

I took a few pictures. Check it out:

There's not really a problem since it fits in fine. It's that the gap around the lens isn't equal all around like how the OEM orange ones are. It's not noticeable or bad. It's just a comment.

Hmm, I don't like then at all. The quality is really bad. It looks like they took the stock lense, cut out the amber and glued on their own clear lense. The fit just doesn't look right at all. To do it right, it needs to be injection molded and injection molding is very $$$$$$$. The same was done on the E46 BMW, and they look really awful. This is my opinion, of course. I think the painted ones look a lot better and cleaner, especially on darker colored cars.

Actually, they were injection moulded and like you said, moulding is $$$$ so to cut costs, their were some shortcuts taken but the amber was not just cut out and a clear lens glued to it. They actually look really good in person. ;-))

Frank, I'm sure they look different in person, but from the close-up pics, the finish on the lense molded to the housing just doesn't look right. Perhaps it's one of those things that looks better from a distance, as t-bone said. What part of it did you or your source injection mold exactly? The lense, the housing or the entire asssembly?

I priced injection molding them a while back, but the mold for each side was about $10,000! Yikes!!

Hi Simon,

The whole thing was injection molded. The lens and the housing so two molds each side. And the price for the mold, well let's just say it wasn't cheap. Now to cut additional costs, instead of dry stamping them together, the molder suggested on using a clear bonding agent to merge the two parts.

It works well and is a lot cheaper to produce this way. If we did it the traditional way, the price for a set would jump to way over $300. ;-))

Tell you what...you bring a plain chrome license plate frame (with nothing on it) and we'll get an ///AMG frame on your car.

Ricey? Maybe.

But do I like it? Yes. :p

Thanks for your comments though.

Oh...but I will accept any donations if you want to help me purchase some black ones for our C320 sedan. I think the painted black ones would look good on that car.

I've seen both from Evosport and MBNZ and in my opinion i think would go with Evosport just because of the color. But then again that's my humble opinion.

Note that the Evosport is not a clear lens, it is a painted lens.

I, personally, like the clear lens. The painted lens doens't appear to have any purpose, just looks like a patch filling in a hole, IMHO. Admittedly, as I have told Frank, the quality is more Chrysler than Daimler, but unless you sit on the ground right next to it, it looks just fine and has an apparent function. Either is an improvement over the amber.

If Mr. Vanos can bring some black ones for the new C-classes on Sunday, I'd bring my money with me to purchase it.
