rough idle on cold start and some moke

i have a 98 E300 td , on cold start it idles rough for about a minute or less
is sounds like a glow plug i'ts not heating up but i don't get no glowplug indicator when the car is running like it should if a glowplug is bad , is it possible that the glowplug does warm up but not heat up enough , or could it be an injector problem? or what else can anyone sugest ? please any idea is respected and appriciated.

Sounds like you're on the right track. If you're a DIY'er then dig in. Myself, I'd visit your trusted mechanic for a tune up.

I would double check your engine coolant temp sensor. It is that sensor that tells the ECU to shorten or prolong to the maximum the afterglow time on!!

To check the ECT run the AC fault tests. Good luck.

I woulden't worry about where the ECT sensor is untill you confirm that it is faulty. Did you run the AC fault test?? That test will list all AC faults, one of which is the ECT sensor.

FYI---If it is faulty, on a 606.9XX the ETC is located on the drivers side rear under the intake manifold. Good luck!!

Great job------------Now all you have to do is post the codes and we will help you determine the faults. Good luck!!

Good morning,

Well I just don't know were to start, except the good news is that with all the faults the engine coolant temp sensor is not faulted.

The other concern is that you reported two faults 1224 and 1454. The concern is that both of those numbers I can not identify a fault definition. Are you sure they are a correct read??

In any event fault 1241 is a low refrigerant level and that makes sense because number 7 refrigerant pressure is way low at 2 bar.

Regardless of the condition of the AC system, none of the faults correspond to a "smooth running" diesel engine----remember this all started based on my suggestion to check the ECT.

The engine control unit tells the glow plugs to stay on longer based upon ECT and the quickest way to determine wether the ECT sensor is good is to check the AC faults, however in your case the ECT is not faulty.

Without some serious injection pump tests, I don't know what to offer next, however I still believe that the issue is with the amount of fuel. This also assumes no leaks in the low pressure fuel lines and the CEL is not on!!

Next stop a good diesel injection pump mechanic!!

don't you think if it's a bad pump the engine would not run well even when warm ?
an other thing is that i pulled out two of the glow plugs and made contact to the engine and turnd them on to heat up, i saw that they only heat up at the tip of it about 3/8 on an inch ,is that haw they should work or are they supposed to heat up all the way to the metalic part which is thicker?
these codes that i showed you are a bit old since i had the EC light staying on and ran the test , you are right i have low refrigirant , so the codes were taken i think before this problem started , but i will pull them out again and see if they show different. just if it would make a difference as well this problem started right after i used the diesel KLEEN product to clean the injectors , i did use some extra of it more then normal in fact but on the bottle it said i could use extra if i wanted faster results.
i'm sorry for writing so much. and thank you

Not to worry, you have many different topics that do not appear to have a common fault, but I will try---1) glow plugs only glow at the lower part not the complete length. The established test is to resistance test the glow plugs at the plug. A good plug is about 6 ohms. When they go bad the dash glow plug light will stay on after the engine runs. 2) Try to get current AC faults, 3) Normally when a diesel smokes and misses on start up it is a fuel combustion issue, fuel doesnt get fully burned, too much fuel is injected into the chamber, remember its a diesel it is the heat of compression and timmed fuel delivery.

Plus it is very hard to diagnose these type of problems over the internet problems--you listed the faults but did not indicate till later that the faults were not current----how are fiolks going to help with bad infromation!!

yes you are right , i apologize, i just wasn't sure of when, because it was a matter of a few days apart , but i should have made sure about that i will try to run the test again .
now i'm hoping it is a bad ECT rather then anything else . also note that i don't get good fuel economy anymore , i'm only getting about 24-25 mpg in average mix highway and city , which is not good at all compared to what others are reporting and to what i knew about these engines . maybe this will tell you something more on the problem i'm haveing .

Hi Plutoe or anyone else , i am back with the new diagnoses test values and here they are if anyone still wants to offer some help .
(1 16) (12 4.3)
(2 08) (20 0.0)
(3 26) (21 00)
(4 27) (22 00)
(5 19) (23 00)
(6 41) (24 11.4)
(7 03) (40 60 )
(8 15) (41 19)
(9 00) (42 00)
(10 0.8) (43- 112)
(11 1.8)

Just to make sure i ran the test the right way ! this is how i did it , i lowered the temperature settings to low on auto and by pressing and holding the rest button i was able to collect the values from 1 to 43 i not see the error sign E this time , could it be becouse i changed the CC unit , the first one had a blury screen is it posible that this one has not been able to collect the correct date yet even though it has been several days , even though the first one was taken from another car several months back . however any halp at all i appriciate , thanks again to Plutoe.

If you tested for faults and there were none then there are none---nice job. However what does the AC actual data have to do with cold start idle issues.

Your glow plug light goes out like it is supposed and does not come on while running---- correct!!!

Your check engine light is not on-----correct

We were looking at the AC faults for the ECT information, if that was faulty that could be the reason for the cold start issues, however its good which is also good.

The other area of cold start issues are the glow plugs and the glow plug circuit, however you checked all that and seemed fine.

Another area to investigate are the injectors themselves, however on our 606 engines you can't just hook up a scanner to determine if they are working properly, because they are mechanical injectors not electronic like on the 642 and 647. Especially cold start problems because it is difficult to get varying cylinder temp data, because they are all cold. Therefore they have to be taken out and taken to a truck injector testing and repair service to be refurbished.

If you have a block heater, I would use it to see if that improves the cold start issues!!

That's it, except for bad compression, but you say the car runs fine once warm!!

Yes the car runs fine ones warm and also if do warm up the glow plugs a few times seems to run alittle better on the start or in a warmer weather
i'm in connecticut (north east usa ) and it gets cold here at night but in warmer days it runs better .
Thank you Plutoe.
