Question Front Brake Rotor Removal???

All,

I am in the process of disassembling the front brake hardware. The calipers, caliper mounting bracket, and the small allen head rotor screw has been removed. How do you remove the rotor from the front hub?

Thanks,

Rob Lee

Un Screw The Set Screw at the 1 o clock poss ...Cant Tell in the Pic if its removed and Tap on the back side of the rotor... a little Wd40 on the Hub/Rotor Will Help. They do rust..
When Installing use a little antiseize on the hub...for The next time...It Works!

Thanks Marc! I do have the small hold down removed. I guess I just have to be more aggressive in pounding it off. The anti-seize compound is a good idea. I will put some on!

Use a rubber mallet and pound on the front side for a few hits. From there just pound the rotor out. Make sure you hit all the spots and angle. It will come out eventually

Rotor replacement

I upgraded my original rotors with a set of Brembo crossdrilled ones. After you remove the allen head bolt and pull the rotor off. Mine were fused on because of the heat. I put a couple of the lug bolts back in and tried to beat on the back side of the rotor with a rubber malet but it would not budge. I ended up putting a bolt that was smaller than the lug bolts through one of the lug bolt holes and put a knut and washer on the back side. Then I lined the bolt up with something solid behind the rotor. As I tightened down on the bolt, the knut and washer pushed in the back side of the rotor until broke free. The lug bolts kept it from flying off in my face. It took quite a bit of force to break them free so be ready for a loud bang.

Thumbs up Thanks!

Thanks for all of the messages. When I got home after work, I found my 5lbs. sledge hammer. The right or passenger side broke free with 3 good hits between the lug bolt holes. The left side would not come off after 5-8 good hits. I used some penetrating oil, I think is called PB or PJ Blaster. I sprayed into the lug holes and around the bearing dust cover. I came back a hour later and it came off with 2 or 3 hits of the hammer.

Hey Rob, if you don't mind me asking, where do I get a set of part sheets or the CD/program you are using to show the diagram? Thanks...

I got two disks off of Ebay last year. They are supposed to be service disks. They help, but they do not contain everything and you must be connected to the internet to use them.

E55 KEV and all, here is the picture of the rear brakes. The database I have on the CDs and/or the internet data that it hooks into does not show any diffs for the E55. I know this is not true, I just think that the data is incomplete.

Thanks,

Rob Lee

The other day I replaced the front pads & rotors on son's 98 E320. They were basically rusted on. I sprayed some PB Blaster penetrating oil where the disc meets the bearing cap & used an old hammer to hit the back edge going around until they broke loose. I followed others advice & put a little anti seize under the new rotor. Bought rotors & pads from Rockauto. I've had great luck with them. Brake job wasn't bad...
