HELP: Dealer can't diagnose - Bad Idle/Bucking at Light

All,

Having an issue and would appreciate help. Dealer has had the car 1 week.

Issue:
Started a week ago on Friday. Car has rough idle and bucks/shakes at light. Got progressively worse. By Sunday, although cranking car would try to start for about 2-3 seconds - (always started in the end). By Monday, the idle/shakes and bucking were helluva noticeable - I was getting quesy! Drove it to MB dealer and dropped it off. Car drives fine, pulls strong though. No Lights were on.

Dealer:
Tuesday: Diagnosed with faulty x2 injectors, one wire and bad Mass Air Flow Unit. Cost approx $1,200. Oh btw... your check engine light is on!
Wednesday: Parts not in.
Thursday: Parts installed (injectors, wires, MAF) - Still bucking/shaking. More diagnosis needed.
Friday: Re-diagnosed - Faulty Electronic Control Module (ECM). Service Advisor says tech run fault tests on it and confirmed the new injectors were also not acting as they should if they received ECM commands. Must order ECM - cost in neighborhood of $2,000.

Dealer has stated that I will not get charged for any mis-diagnosis or parts - they even worked to apply a "customer discount" - but I have no idea where this is going - and I plan on visiting the service manager first thing tomorrow morning.

Q: Has anyone experienced this issue before?
Q: Should I be skeptical of mis-diagnosis?
Q: How often does the ECM go bad?

Car is a 2000 E55 AMG with 140K miles... running perfectly up until this last week. I have had the car for over 6 yrs and over 90K miles.

Regards,

Double-A

Man, you are only as good as your best service tech.! I can't stand it when techs "throw" parts at something hoping to fix the problem. (I am metaphorically speaking about my industry). Poolguys will tell you that they understand how to interface a Jandy controller to a Crestron system and thousands later, they can't write the code.

For all of the information gleaned from these forums and for what it is worth, honestly sounds like a faulty Crank Position Sensor. Car will start OK when cold. Stumble at a red light. Hesitation should cease under acceleration. Stop at a liquor store and the car won't start. Wait 10 minutes for the engine to cool and the car should crank over.

While the cowling is off, replace the Bosch O2 sensors on the exhaust for good measure. Scour this site for a descriptive PDF. I am by no means an automotive tech. I repair swimming pools for a living and tinker with the Benz and a boat as a hobby

Information is knowledge and there are guys on this site with plenty of both! This site has saved me $$Thousands.

@Swim... That's just it. Car didn't stall. Although I am sure that in a few more days it would have.... it honestly was bucking though.

I am going down to the dealership today to find out what gives and set expectations on costs.

Your issue is all in Jandy. Pentair is much better and besides, its a 500 dollar JANDY part/ crestron only needs a breakaway relay and a 232 port... Just saying...

It's not

a crank sensor.
Has anyone disconnected the exhaust pipes to see if freeing up the exhaust before the primary cats cures the issue?
A plugged cat will cause the symptoms you have.
ECM rarely fail and they are guessing now just like they were guessing when you pulled up to the shop door.
Take it someplace else.

hey man .... x2 Oh Lord .... remove the o2 sensor(s) before the front cats to relieve exhaust gases in case the cat(s) are plugged up, and see if that stops the bucking and resolves the issue .... ecm doesn't just go bad! ... tell them to put it back to the way it was (you were better off!) and take it elsewhere!

... you didn't mention any codes - no cel doesn't mean no codes.... did the stealer see any codes, before "recommending" the expensive parts/labor?!?!? .... don't trust the stealer just because he paid for the mb license and has a computer - he still has to diagnose properly and correctly, then fix it without guessing what the next part swap should be .... good luck!
