Mercedes-Benz E420 1997
![Exclamation](https://mbworld.org/forums/images/icons/icon4.gif)
Hello everyone,
I am having a weird problem with my E420 and no one up till now was able to identify it. The car is 1997 and has 125,000km on.
Here is what happens:
I start the car, ESP on display screen and ESP light are on, the engine automatically revs up and down between 1000 and 1500 rpm for about 10 seconds to 1 minute, After that the sound is normal and the rpm idles at 1000 rpm, the gas pedal (accelerator) is limited to a max of 2000 rpm. No matter how much you push the pedal, the engine wont go above 1500-2000 rpm. You put the gear on D, and it moves at 20km/h and since the accelerator is limited, you cant speed up.
Note that after the engine idles at 1000 rpm, I leave it to warm up a bit, and then I turn it off. After about 15-30 mins, I come back and it turns on normally.
Note: This doesn't happen all the time. Sometimes I turn on the car and it turns on and there is absolutely nothing.
I changed transmission oil and filter, cleaned fuel filter and checked spark plugs, and reset the ECU.
Here is what happens in video:

Thanks a lot in advance for your feedback.

Why is the check oil light on?`
Do you have a check engine light on and have you scanned for codes?
Have you checked for leaks or holes in the intake tube system?
The car is in limp mode. That is why you can't go above a certain speed.
All of those systems are warnings to stop driving the car and do some inspection as to the cause of the symptoms.
Do inspect the above,do check for codes,do take it to a good independent mb shop if you can't easily find the faults. Otherwise you are going to do some real damage and cost some real money to repair.

Did you accidentally put wrong fuel on it?
This might sound like a trivial question but it actually happened to my 98 E430. We accidentaly put low octane fuel on the car and it went into limp mode so bad I tought the tranny had died - a bottle of octane booster and high octane fuel to top it off and everything was fine. Knocking protection mode
