W210 W140
I have a Snap-On code reader. It works on my W140 and W210 well. Very simple and easy to use.

Code readers vary from 20$ - 300$, but the main point is still the same - giving you the code. Of course the more expensive ones will have other functions and stuff, but if all your interested in is getting the code ( there is a thread somewhere here or benzworld that tells you what all the codes mean so when you get the code you can easily find the problem ) then its pretty much up to you which one you want to get.

Before you buy a scanner, try to determine what you want to do because the features and benefits of scanners are varied and therefore have varied price ranges.

Additionally remember that most hand held scanners will not read the MB body, chassis and specific transmission codes. Regarding transmission they will read the generic transmission fault sent to the ECU, telling you that there is an issue with the transmission, but thats all. I think it comes down to what codes you want to read/clear and information you want to solve a problem

The good news is that our diesels do not have all the issues that the gassers have with their ignition and exhaust systems.

I got this $60 scanner from here:
http://www.diydiagnostics.com/
It handles the canbus systems of our vehicles. I used it one time to read and clear a error code on my vehicle.
