Cool Just bought E320 , found out it says *rebuilt*

I just bought a 2002 e320, I went to register and found out it says rebuilt on title. How can I find out what was rebuilt? Previous Owner has no idea. My e320 has 143k miles, and is in alright condition. Just has a power steering issue, and possible exhaust leak.

Also, I am curious about how this valet key thing works.

Thanks!

Rebuilt means the car was in an accident, and written off by the insurance company. Either the PO or someone else bought it and rebuilt it. A rebuilt title is a different color than a normal title. The PO is full of crap when he tells you he has no idea. Hope you didn't pay going rate for a car that has been rebuilt. I would see about getting your money back. If he says no, tell him you will sue him for non disclosure.

The valet key allows you to lock the glove box with your normal key but still allow the engine to be started with the valet key.

Rebuilt does not necessarily mean totaled. It means the repair would exceed the value of the car. On a brand new car, yes it would most likely be totaled. On a car with some age to it, especially our cars, it does not take much to have a write off.

A CarFax does no good at this point, as you know the car has been in an accident severe enough for the insurance company to write it off. You need to take the car for an inspection. Either a dealer or an independent mercedes mechanic. Tell him you have a salvage title and you want the car inspected. They will be able to tell you how severe and if there are any issues.

As for what you paid, this depends on the damage and if it was fixed correctly. There is an old saying, "there is nothing more expensive than a cheap Mercedes". If the car was not repaired correctly, you may get a taste of how true this saying is.

Well the good news is that you own a Benz---all the this and that's amounts to BS. Just remember do not put one red cent into the car, change the oil and enjoy the ride!! If you get a year out of the car, that is very cheap transportation!!

I wouldn't worry about the "rebuilt" title. most states require an extensive inspection after the repairs before the car can be registered again and driven on public roads.

On top of that you got it cheap enough. I had several "rebuilt" or "prior salvage" cars, one of the reasons was the price and they are usually in nice shape(...new paint...etc.). never once had an issue.
