Exhaust note is highly dependent on the volume of air passing thru the system. You just don't have enough and an exhaust system made for a larger volume isn't helping. You could try a 'glass pack' muffler if it's legal in your area and they are still made. Essentially a straight pipe with some fiberglass around the circumference to deaden the sound a little. But beware that the loss of the designed back pressure could cause engine problems since MB's weren't designed to be 'hot-rodded'.

The easier way to think of it is a tuned horn.
Adding the bell of a tuba to a trumpet will only have a marginal effect and not necessarily the one you want.

Yeah its never going to sound like an e55 no matter what you do, unless you do a engine swap. Basically in an E240 its like putting a muffler on a civic and expecting it to sound like a supra...just not gonna happen.

the e55 is quite refined ,not too noisy compared to the amg's of today. i think some owners are fitting x pipes and removing cats, there lots of threads about it. Maybe just use the back box from amg and x pipe on original exhaust and cat removed.

There are many differences other than the displacement, firing order, compression rate , and # of valves; V8s have a very unique sound because of the two banks expelling gases simultaneously.
I've seen 320s with an AMG muffler , but there is nothing much you can do about the raspy note.

Cheers.

remove the resonator and run straight pipes to your exhaust
