cloudy head/fog lamp covers

Anyone know how to get the front lamp covers clean on a 97 e class? Mine have gone all cloudy and yellowish from being outside and I'm told the lights are sealed. Can they be cleaned and if so with what or does one need to replace the whole housing?
Would this be a good time to replace them with Xenons and if so where is the best place to get them? Xenons from the dealer are NOT an option due to extreme price stupidity. Thanks in advance.

Please clarify your question. The first line says fog lamp covers and then you ask about Xenon lowbeams. For the headlights try Meguiars plastic cleaner and plastic polish.

For Xenon lowbeam conversion check out the prices at:

www.bekkers.com $995
www.autoclass.com $998

You want to buy the complete OEM HID assemblies made by Hella.

You have Sport Package. Is the lens glass or plastic? You may need to replace your projector beam foglamps. The cloudy/yellowing is probably on the inner lens.

Every single lens on the front of the car, apart from the fog lights in the chin spoiler, have gone foggy and yellowish. I pretty sure they are plastic. I will try the cleaner as you suggest, thanks. I did not mean to differentiate low or high beam as they are all in need of a clean.

Does it appear as if moisture has accumulated inside? Lights are covered under warranty, and this should be an easy fix at the dealer.

moisture dimmed my 99e320 passenger-side primary and parking lamps. dealer did not properly seal after replacing a parking lamp bulb last month. water droplets on inside of lens are plainly visible. dealer said they'd correct while doing b service and 90k maintenance scheduled for tomorrow. i'll ask if they can clean the inside of the lenses and report back.

saw g-wagon on the showroom floor while at the dealer to schedule service. one really nice truck. gas hog though. 12-14 mpg. mb should offer a diesel version in the u.s. i'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Mach430,

That 97 E420 belonging to mrbeverlyhills is out of warranty.

dcc,

The E-Class headlight units are sealed and can not be separated. If under warranty the dealer should replace. If not under warranty I hope you don't have Xenon - $1000 each side at dealers. The halogen ones are around $300 I think.

There's another post here somewhere (look it up), but I bought mine and replace them for about $200 each. Install takes about 10 miuntes each side and it really updates the car.

You'll never get them "cleaned" (trust me)

I, too, have the same thing... but I know you can colour sand then lenes to clean them up?

Also, I was wondering... can I replace the plastic lenes with the glass ones found on the 00+ E classes? -- I know you can replace the plastic ones, but then they will get yellowish after awhile.

when i bought my 420 i was less than pleased by the condition of the headlights. they seem pretty foggy, it was hard to see the bulbs and reflectors on the inside. i bought a 6 dollar bottle of plastic polish from the local auto parts store and went to work with a rag. i also used some 600 grit sandpaper. after an hour and damn sore arm, my headlights look pretty good. there is still a bit of oxidation towards the top - kind of a line of mineral deposits, but all in all they look close to new. every once in a while i break out the bottle and work it in - maybe in a few years they will look totally new

As I said, you'll not be totally happy unti they are replaced. I tried a compound used for cleaning aircraft windows (acrylic - I work for an airline) and it still didn't work.
