Looking to get new wheels for my W210
I need some advice. I've been shopping and Ebay-ing for 2-3 weeks and have not been able to make up my mind as to what to get. There are so many differences. Like take this auction for $600:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=43959
how is it different from this one for $1280:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=42614
I mean I don't mind paying the money, I would just hate to pay more than I need to.
Anywho, my car is a 1999 E320 (4matic, if that makes a difference), and I was thinking of going for a 18" or 19". I was also wondering if there's anything wrong with chromes. Any tire recommendations?
Thanks all.
Tofi

Chrome wheels are nice. Problem is, they WILL flake...it's just a matter of time. If you're the type who changes wheels every 1-3 years that shouldn't be a problem. But if you're the type who wants to buy 1 set of wheels and not worry about it for the life of the car, STAY AWAY FROM CHROME.
Believe me, I went throught the hassle. My chrome rims began to flake and every morning my tires would be flat. (Luckily I had an air compressor at home)
Re-chroming is EXPENSIVE. The old chrome has to be stripped off, then rechromed
Buying one new wheel and chroming it is just delaying the pain...eventually you'll have to do all 4 wheels.
If you don't like the silver finish, you can always get your wheels polished or just buy wheels with the "diamond cut" (also called "machine finish").
One last thing...wherever you buy your wheels, be sure they will sell you just one wheel in the future just in case a pot hole ruins one of your wheels. Some shope won't do that...they'll only sell it in a set of 4.
I've bought stuff from Tire rack and highlinewheels and I'm satisfied with my purchase.
First of all, always go w/ triple plate chroming, cost a bit more, but much more reliable.
If you live in place like CA or Nevada, where there's no snow whatsoever, chrome will probalby last as long as the life of you car. At the place where I did my chrome (remmended by Luke from tirerack), their warranty is lifetime if you live in the westcoast.
If you live in place that have lot of snow, which then will have salt sprayed on road, your chrome won't last very long.
ruffrob my man,, nice car you got there. You GOTTA upgrade the tail light, either red & clear or read & smoke would be nice. The old tail light have to go

zam2000 - I have yet to come across a chrome wheel that has not flaked. I live in Hawaii and my wheels flaked. When I was in college in California my wheels flaked. My friend in Las Vegas has chrome wheels that flaked. It's just a matter of time (lifetime of the car....I highly doubt it). Just look on ebay and browse those used chrome wheels, most are not older than 1-2years and have a "small flake" in the inner lip, or back of the rim, or in the gaps, etc.
If you have a lifetime warranty that's great, cause you'll need it...I'm 100% sure about that. This is how they'll "catch" you on that warranty... you'll have to pay for the shipping, labor, and stripping of the old chrome. The warranty will cover just the re-chroming process itself...parts only. From a business stand point, it doesn't make sense to re-do EVERYTHING FREE (unless they're trying to maintain good PR).
Don't get me wrong, I'm not blasting your post. I like the way chrome wheels look on a car too. I also bought them for my car. When I moved to Hawaii, I also though the weather would not cause the chrome to flake. It did. Since then, I decided to stay away from chrome because I do not want to buy new wheels every 1-3years.
The Best of Mercedes & AMG
Not all chrome shop are crooked, especially if it's recommended by people like Luke @tirerack. Do a google search on PlateCorp, you'll see how it's ranked: one of the best in the country. Also, I think we have different concept in life-time warranty: they offer it not because they can re-do it for free (or look for a cheap way to hook you in), rather, it's because of the confident they have in their service/product that will last for as long as you own your car, so that they don't have to re-do it (or will rarely have to re-do it). And btw, @PlateCorp, if you drop by for rechrome (in a 1/100000 chance that it goes wrong), No charge whatsoever !!! , just as w/ Snap-On tool (you could just buy some Chinese made tool for life-time warranty, at 1/4 the price, does it mean they're the same quality ? NO !!! ).
I did ton of research before I sent out my rims for chrome. I pay substantially more than typical chrome ad seen on internet or flyer. Mine also took 3 weeks (for each layer to bond). Some lame shop even offer to finish chroming within a week !!. At the end, you get what you pay for.

Before people start saying I buy cheap rims or send my wheels to cheap chroming shops...
1. My first chrome wheels were AZEV $4,000 back in 1991
2. My 2nd chrome wheels were OEM Mercedes wheels directly from the stealers (obviously sent out for chroming because NO stock mercedes are sold with chrome wheels...that's an aftermarked "add on" - I have no idea where the dealers sent the wheels for chroming)
3. My brother's wheels were OEM Chevy wheels directly from the stealers
4. My friend's wheels were Lorenzers (sp?) (he paid thousands for them)
Some people will get lucky, but in my opinion I believe the vast majority will flake...it's just a matter of time. Chroming is a personal choice. I like the way it looks and tried it. Unfortunately I've had bad experience so I'm staying away (so are my friends and brother). You on the other hand are at the opposite extreme...you've had good experience and I'm happy for you. I'm sure you'd do it again on another set of wheels in a heartbeat.
I'm doing same as you - keyboard shopping for wheels. You and I may be the only ones with same color body. After viewing all the other photos of E320s on that humongous thread, I almost wish I held out for black or silver. But hey, I have the Bordeaux and will live with it. I like the narrower bladed AMG rims but my pocketbook doesn't agree. So I've been cruising TireRack as well as WheelExchange. I like the wheels in your links but didn't fancy the idea of cleaning those little nooks/crannys with q-tips. maybe I can insert them in a chuck of a cordless and "vvvvuuuppp" them during cleaning, eh? :-)
Anywho, which wheels are you getting partial to? I like those Lorinser style ones and then the flat AMG's are nice too. But haven't been able to find replicas and the originals a little more than I think I should spend (not to mention wifey's lovely comments).
Let me know if ur flying low over NYC sometimes. I'll buy u coffee!
Oh, will PM you with some of my wheel selections. I know wheel selection is subjective...like buying a tie or underwear. But want to see what you thought.
I just like how chrome wheels look on a black car. I have only have one instance where a tire has gone flat due to flaking chrome at the bead. I had the tire removed and the rim polished down on the inside lip so that the tire would seal.
MBWorld: Where do you live,BTW Sweet Ride, looks like the only snow you get there is from a cone.....
E-Klasse: I need the place you got that back deck brake light from that you posted on the 'other' forum, pretty please....always a pleasure to see your car....
