My 04 E320 needs its brake pads and rotors changed after 9,800 miles? WTF!?!?!?

What the hell is going on?

I took in my car for service today because it was squeaking when I breaked, and while performing its A Service thing, the guy called me and said they need to change my back rotors and brake pads, and all together it will cost me $480.00

What the **** is that about?
9,800 miles and i need all this **** changed?

And I thought a warranty covered this....what bull****...

Brakes are a wear item. However, I think there is a Service Bulletin about premature wear of the rear pads. There is a new, improved pad available. Have your dealer check for TSB's on this problem.

BTW, if you were driving a BMW, this problem would be covered by their four year full maintenance package.

To say the least.........

I've read here in this forum that there is a service bulletin about the rear brakes wearing prematurely due to the SBC system.... I understand this is a known problem and the dealership is to replace brakes and rotors free of charge... I think a search in the forum is in order or perhaps someone else will chime in (konigstiger) and give you the details with TSB numbers...
Goodluck.

The dealer should automatically offer that the pads and rotors will be free, because to have them both go at such early mileage is too early. My pads only went in the 16-18K range, which I also thought was a little too early.

I always throught the cutoff was 10,000 miles for a free replacement, but either way, if they charge you, speak to your service advisor. I'm pretty sure that they will accomodate you.

Try speaking to your area MBUSA Service & Parts Operations Manager (SPOM) if your dealer is uncooperative. Play up the safety angle if you will. Of course all involved will default to it being a wear item and as such not covered under warranty. However, with enough persuasion, seeing that your under 12000 miles, it is not entirely impossible to have all the required work done at no cost to you.

The bulletin referenced is TSB P-B-42.10/48 JUL04 – Increased Rear brake pad wear. Unfortunately this bulletin is “for information only” (they always include a way out for themselves) and does not, in fact, automatically mandate pad or rotor replacement. However it is nonetheless a starting point and should be used to support your claim. After all they specifically state (in writing) that your existing pads need to be revised to work properly, no? And I wouldn’t mention the G35 – at all!

If you want a copy post or PM your email address.

Thumbs down

I had the front rotors and pads replaced at 5000 miles for free due to bad squeaking...now at 12000 the squeaking is back and the dealer tried to tell me some BS about the caliper spring clips were hitting the rotors so they didn't have to replace everything again, well the squeak is back again after their BS repair and they're going to replace the pads and rotors again and again and again if they have to. $60,000.00 car and I'm the one at every light with the sqeaking brakes, what BS...MB is dealers are the :v
