Hood Open Alert - Self Fix? or Dealer

The hood open alert popped up last week on my new 2004 E500 wagon. Any insights on how to fix myself, or must go to dealer?

Thanks,

I really don't know if this is a joke or what?

Close the hood?

If you recently opened the hood, then open it again and slam it shut. I got the same alert when I tried to get cute and finesse the closing. The hood needs a firm slam in order to close properly since it does have at least two hood latches.

I have gotten the same message a couple of times after opening and closing the hood (I think the word is bonnet for some of our readers), although it turned off within a few seconds. I have forgotten to report this to the dealership when the car was serviced. Recommend you write it down on your complaint list for the next service appointment. The hood open message has never popped up for me if I did not just open the hood immediately before the next restart of the engine. I too now firmly close (almost slam) the hood down and the message has not come up for me recently.

You can usually fix this yourself-you have two hood latches on your vehicle-one on the passenger side and one on the drivers side-under one of these(I believe passenger side)there is a microswitch. These sometimes come out of their clips and wont trip when the hood is closed. If you look straight down inside the latch with a light you will see it.

I had that problem on my current E500 and a previously owned C240, both times it was a shorted hood switch that needed to be replaced at the dealer.
No charge of course
