Color is a special Bluetec blue for the motor shows. It is not currently an available color as the paint process is very expensive. Perhaps something designo might offer in a couple of years. It has also been called liquid metal with blue tint. MB has used this on several recent autoshow cars.

From looking at that pic, are the Bluetec models not based on the face-lifted version?

Car and Driver had some pictures of the facelifted Bluetec E320 at the NY show online, and I assume that it will arrive in the fall with the "new look."

Bluetech is diesel techonology. The paint has been called this as it is the liquid metal version (blue) which is tinted blue and has been the signature color for the bluetech cars in the motor shows. There was a non-facelifted version at the Detroit show with the same paint and interior scheme. This is in many photos. However, the car at NY is a facelifted car.

Although I'm sure it's not the same, it is similar to Chrysler's "Butane."

Here is Platinum blue (my car) and it's a bit darker than the Bluetec color, I think... but the pigment is roughly the same color.. It was my favorite color besides white, and we already had a white car..

The problem with taking pictures is the colour shade is never the same. This is a Chinese taxi which is the same colour as your vehicle??

See my signature for another picture of the same colour.

John

Bluetec is a diesel technology that reduces emissions from the vehicle. It has nothing to do with the color of the vehicle.

Guys/girls, it is a special color based on new paint technology which is not yet available - "liquid metal". Believe me, I should would know It is informally called bluetech blue as it is an autoshow color which has been used numerous times on bluetech cars. Of course Bluetech is diesel technology which reduces the nitrogen oxides in diesel exhaust to a lower level - and eventually to a level which is equal or lower than gas engines. If you go to the show you can see for yourself that it is not platinum blue.

I don't think a flashy new technology would be a stock color, but who knows. Perhaps someone would email MBUSA and post the answer.

As much as I would like to self-flatter my good taste, I won't post it here! I honestly don't think it's platinum blue but let's see.

I'm not saying it is, or it is not! what I am saying though is the person on the video link is talking a lot of tosh!! Hopefully you did not get your information from him

We must always be aware that the same colour paint has different names in different countries. Platinum blue is a name that is used to impress US owners. In most other countries it is called teallite blue. Who knows what this alleged new colour is really called? It does seem strange to have a colour named after a piece of technology? CDI black, COMAND green?

Regards,
John

Some confusion here. This color is for show cars only. It is nick-named Bluetec Blue because it what Mercedes is using to push the technology. The paint itself is done via a new process which literally wraps the car in an even thicker layer of paint than the current nano paint. I've seen this color at the Detroit and Chicago auto shows it is not Platinum Blue or any variant thereof.

This would make some sense. Show cars do tend to have that extra coat of clear lacquer.

I would dread to think of the costs to spray a show car with a seperate one off colour (simply because of the labour involved)

Owners will always want to have that particular shade?

Would they take a shell off the production line and take it into an individual spray booth?

Then there would be the problem of getting the nano top coat to go 'off'

It needs to be baked at very high temperatures!

Spraying a one off in a seperate spray booth would not allow this? So the car would NOT have the nano paint??? (A must in my opinion)

Again I am NOT disagreeing, I am merely asking several questions.

Thanks for the update.

Regards,
John

Here is an article on the paint technology, it is called Alu-Beam.

http://www.aluminum.org/ANTemplate.c...ContentID=8241

This type of paint was used on the R-Class concepts as well as the recent Bluetec vehicles.

Unfortunately that is true especially with the tech and hp race going on today which Mercedes is determined to win.

Thanks very much for supplying the interesting link. I note it is a year old, so hopefully there should be more information 'out there'?

Thanks again,
John
