Tire Decision - Pirelli vs. Avon
Time for tires again and when checking out tirerack, the two choices for my size (245/40WR18) that had the best wear were Avon and Pirelli. I currently have the Pirelli but Avon rates better in a few very important categories and is close in all plus they are cheaper (139 vs 165). Here are the results (Avon - Tech M550 A/S vs Pirelli - PZero Nero M&S). The first number is Avon and the second is Pirelli for each category.

SNOW TRACTION_7.6......7.2

I am not familiar with Avon. Does anyone have any input/advice?

Dang... Its almost a coin toss between the two tire comparisons you posted...
I have no experience with Avon tires on a car but have run them on many of my bikes and they are avery good tire, but wear quickly. I have a set of the Pirelli PZero Nero M&S on the E now and could'nt be happier....Excellent tread wear. Try Americas tire store and check their prices... Off hand I believe I paid about $130.00 each, mounted and balanced.

By the way, those numbers suggest that the Avon's would wear better than the Pirelli's which would be great.

I had a set of P Zero Neros and chnaged them after 2K miles. had a vibration that would not go. The PS2's are are world of a difference. A 300 upgrade from P Zero neros - but worth every cent. NOt sure if you could use them in Pitt weather

I also have the Nero for 2 summers now as I swap them out during winter. The have approximately 8K-10K miles on them and the rears are getting bald (I like to squeal them once in awhile from a dead stop
)while the fronts are still decent tread. IMO, they have good dry traction but I find them somewhat squirrely on slightly wet payment compared to the Michelin Hydroedge on the S500. Maybe because my rears are going bald. If you want max dry traction, I would also recommend the PS2 (how about going with 245/40/18s?) or how about the Nitto NT555s: http://www.nittotire.com/lifestyle_euro_ninth_ad.asp

I just had P zeros M/S installed about 1k miles ago based on reasearch I did and opinions of members on this board. I now have vibration at low speeds that I did't have before and they definitely hydroplane easier than the Michelins I had. Low noise level and good dry traction, though.

I bought the Cooper ZN2's That is what is being installed on the corvettes without the run flat. So far they are as good or better that the factory tire. Just another option. Jim

I put the Avons on my 2003 E500 which has 23000 miles on it and do not have any pull or vibration. I think Michelins are over priced. I would go with the Avons A/S M550.

I have the AVONS
I purchased the exact Avons you described and have about 20,000 miles on them on my 05 CDI. The tires are great, stay balanced, and don't hydroplane in the big rainstorms we have here in Houston. The Michellin MXV4 Energy tires that came on the car were horrible in the rain plus are overpriced. I purchased mine from Discount Tire who matched the tire rack price. IMHO these are a great value but with little name recognition.

I've been very happy with my Pirelli P Zero M&S tires Quiet, smooth and no vibrations. Much better than the OEM Conti's They are a softer tire than the Michelin's and I don't light them up very often so tread wear appears very good for the first 10K. I have them rotated and balanced every 5K as part of the deal at our nearby America's Tire Store.

I just installed Pirellis, can't say much yet...only have 200 or so miles on them. But my vibration problem was from before so i can't really blame the P Zeros.
Just got aligment done, not sure what you guys pay usually, but i think i got ripped off, $150 for 4 tire.

Hey Luxury1. About a year ago I ordered Avon techs for my 03' E500 . I went with the sales guy listed in the tire forum(?Luke). This is only MY experience. I specifically went for comfort and quiet. Hated the ride and the noise. Tires were shot after 13000 miles. Only my experience but skip the Avons.

Quick Question... Any feedback on the the Kumho ECSTA ASX for our W211? I'm up for a tire change after 33K on the OEM's. No issues with the Michelins but wwanted to try a high performance tire.

I was using Falken ST115s in that size and they were wonderful. Excellent handling, smooth ride, quiet, and good in the rain. They are summer tires that require a winter snow tire.
Another tire, that I don't have first hand experience with, is the Firestone Wide Oval. Like the Falken, inexpensive, yet with excellent reviews in all areas. Apparently a Bridgestone design.

PS2's are a great performance tire for canyon carving, but if your into a tire that will burn longer and at a cheaper price you will want to look elsewhere.
