Servicing the sunroof

I've got an 03 E500 Sport. What's involved in servicing the sunroof.

My experience counts only for the std roof not the pano. M-B actually makes a special lubricant for this puprose. I have heard that it is expensive and not packaged in small containers. If you open the roof, you can see the rails that it slides on. I wiped away the old grease(if that is what it is) along with a few bug wings and grit. I am a believer in using their lubricants. Their anti freeze and transmission fluids are a must but in this case I sprayed a white lithium grease lightly on the slides. I don't operate the thing very much but it functions as it always did. Silicone might be a better alternative. That Stone interior in mine is a magnet for dirt, mascara, shoe scuffs, etc. I would be very conservative with whatever I used.

Thanks, I wasn't sure if MB made any adjustments besides lub'g like you described.
I'll give it a shot. The prob I'm having, is it doesn't automatically open or close all the way like it used to. I read somewhere that during this process if the s-roof comes into contact with a object. It will stop. This made me think there was an adjustment.

99% sure that is a "programming" problem. For some reason, when the car looses battery power the mirrors/ seats/ sunroof and maybe the windows have to be cycled through or reprogrammed. If you have an owner's manual, it is very simple. Maybe something like hold "open" switch for a few seconds then "close" and hold for a few seconds. I have a Japanese car and it does the same thing. Scares the crap out of you thinking it is getting ready to quit. I think you have a very minor problem. Good Luck.

They need to be lubricated yearly. If they meet resistance while closing they reverse direction.

As mentioned, maintenance and/or resetting (instructions listed in the manual) should solve your problem. Note it may be necessary to reset sunroof several times:

- key to position 2
- press and hold (for a second or two) the switch to tilt open the roof at the rear
- check to see if roof can be opened and closed

Yep, reprogramming did it. I'm gonna try lubing this weekend.

Thanks,

Thanks,
Too much lube is no good as it picks up debris. Use lube sparingly.

A little off topic here but how come my sunroof and windows dont automatically roll down when I hold down the unlock button on my keypad? it was working a couple of months back but now it doesnt do anything. Does the weather have somthing to do with this as the manual states it's a "summer feature"

unc, I know I had to have it pointing in the direction of the door sensor for mine to work on my Compressor. If that isn't it. It may be a programming issue.

Barry, I was thinking of using a dry graphite lube. What do you think?

It could be a weak battery in the keyfob but more likely a defective IR sensor in the door handle. Mine has one on each side and the driver's side is broken (who would have guessed). I let the car slip out of warranty before I noticed. I think M-B removed the passenger side sensor on later W-211's. Even when mine functions, it is not much of a feature. I have to be pretty much at right angle to the car and about 10-15' away. The unlock signal will go 150-200 feet. Here in the South, the car will not shed very much heat in the time it takes to walk 15 feet. I have no idea of the material and labor cost to replace it (the sensor). (I know it is bad form to knock M-B but my Nippon counterpart goes out to 200 feet or so and is actually useful)

May be caused by battery strength (key), dirty key, dirty door handle sensor, infrared signal interference or you may need a new sensor. I believe the ’03 had sensors on both the driver and passenger door handles. Try opening from both sides. If one side works, and the other does not the sensor on the non-working side may need replacement.

I let the dealer lube it once a year, when they do the Oil Change. I have much to heavy a hand. Besides, the wrong lube is worse than no lube.

Its always been a warranty item for me. But how much can they charge for the lube & labor can't be more than a quarter hour. (Not that thats a bargain, but I don't get the car back with gobs of grease showing... as a matter of fact when I get it back, I can't see any grease on it, but its been lubed properly.)

If anyone is interested, we offer the genuine Mercedes-Benz Sunroof Lubricating Paste. This is the same Lubricating Paste that is used at the dealership when a sunroof is serviced.

Unfortunately, it does not come in a smaller container than this 500 gram tub.

This Sunroof Lubricating Paste can be found on our website HERE, or by clicking on the photo of the container below.

If anyone has any questions about this, please feel free to post or send a PM!
