Do you believe this response from MB?

After 2 years and 23,000 miles I had to replace the rotors and brakes on my 2006 E 350. Why, rust build up made the brakes unsafe??????

What caused this as I garage this car all winter??

Mercedes say I didn't drive it enough. In order to maintain a safe merceds you must drive it every 2-3 days. I wonder where I missed that in all the safety instructions.

Really hard to believe. Many new cars on dealer lots have been sitting idle for several months.

Rust develops on rotors all the time. After a few miles of braking it goes away. So whats the big deal here? Rust is bound to develop on rotors given the conditions of moisture in the air or what have you.

They are correct though, if you drive the car often enough, it will not develop rust because the pads will clean off the rotors.

Hi Larry, sorry no offence but I would have argued against not replacing the brakes... unless they threatened to void your cars warranty.

Seems ridiculous considering your car has such low mileage.

My SL63 rotors develop rust when exposed to moisture, its just the nature of brakes. The only way to prevent this is to get Silicon-Carbide rotors, but who the hell has $40k a set to get that lol.

300E a couple 1994 w124wagon E320 Wagon/,1971MGB Track/Rally, MG Midget Autocross ,2000 E320 wagon.
You

took it in for your 20k service and they saw rust on the rotors and took you
As stated above the surface rust just gets removed by brake application. You are still under warranty aren't you?Look in the manual for any section that says to maintain your brakes the car should be driven every three days
I have a few MG's that sit all winter, bring them out drive for a bit and the brakes shine like new.
Someone pointed out that mb has lots of cars sitting outside on dealers lots for months, are they all being driven around every three days?
Fire off another letter to mbusa, this time direct it higher then the
-shine them on department-
cc to your dealer

did you have any of the warning signs?Had you taken it in because you had a dash message that said visit dealer?Did your brake wear indicators trigger a light?
I bet the reply is no to all the above and you were just plain taken advantage of.

I had a similar situation on a BMW

I bought off the lot, brand new, but at end of model year and had been sitting on lot, near beach in Florida, and rust had developed on the rotors. Dealer asked me to try and drive for a few days and see if that corrected the rust, but the main problem was they had warped as well. They replaced them, no charge. If yours aren't warped, driving should be all they need, at least that's the remedy that BMW and others suggested.

Larry -- Just to safeguard your identity, see if you can black out your last name, address, and VIN... Would hate to see you show up in a bunch of internet searches with some weirdo's all over you after that!
