How much did you pay for bearings?
I tihink my front wheel bearings are shot at 38k miles Just want to know if anyone changed it and how much did it cost? Also are there bearings in the back wheel too that may potentially go bad?

What makes you think it's the wheel bearings? I'm also experiencing a problem with my front driver's wheel, but i'm used to hearing a "whine" from a bad wheel bearing on other cars on turns. Mine does not whine, it sort of thumps. I've rotated the tires - thinking it's a bad tire, but still the same happens. I've got 105k on mine. Thanks for any advice/input.

After reading other threads, i think the issue may be with the tire. My tires are near the point of needing to be changed and others have changed the tires and the noise has gone away. I have a set of 19's with good tread which my brother took off his CLK when he returned it. I'll try and swap them out today or by Saturday and i'll let you know if the sound goes away.
PartyVan,
Are you tires stock Continentals? Other members say they also had trouble with the Conti's and switched to Michilens and a great experience with it.

I have Goodyear F1 D3 tires on mine. I have a whinning sound at 40mph that gets progressively louder with speed, at first I thought it was the tires but now I think it's the bearings with some research. Try "bearings" in search, there are some people that also have the whinning sound and it's fixed after they changed out the bearings.
FWIW, none of the bearings on either of my vehicles have ever been replaced.

A couple of the posts said they had about 40k ish miles on theirs. I think mine is defective...I am going to get it checked out tomorrow and see what happens.

When you're at a speed in which the noise appears, pop the car into neutral and coast. Does the noise go away? If so, it's not a wheel bearing.

Before I posted this thread I read through a couple hours of posts regarding "bearings" on the search that already gave me a big headache so I don't think I am going to go back and find it.

Did they tell you why or how it was burnt out? I am going to take it in on Friday to have it checked out so I can have my mechanic look for all the culprits.

In the above thread, the member changes the bearing but still has the same humming noise. The thread ends on him using microphones on each wheel to see which wheel the hum is coming from. Anyone know if this thread finished elsewhere? Vettdvr?

Doubt if its any suspension part either as your symptoms I believe you said were speed related. Any control arms or bushings would not be speed related but would be noisy on a bump or rough road or, even in a turn, Your noise is most likely from a rotating part such as brakes or even tires. Again with your low mileage I doubt if its wheel bearings.

Next, dropping the tension on the serpentine belt and running a COLD engine for 30 secs takes the accessory belt driven items out to the equation if the noise still remains.
It more complicated than that, but the above is a start.

Coasting in N basically takes the tranny out of the equation. If its a whell bearing, the noise will remain.

How long have you had the GY's? The steel belts can make a whine and I experienced this on my new 70 ? Pontiac and thought I had a bad differential bearing on the pinion. However it was radial tire wine. I have had many bad experiences with tires other than Michelin on the E500 and would really suspect you have tire wine,, "but not a Cab,, probably a Char" red wine
I would expect a bearing to make a noise that would be in cycle with the tire rotation. If it is a high speed wine it is probably not the bearing. Remember 1 times tire rotation is outer race problems,, 2 times tire rotation is probably inner race. It is possible that a noise could come from roller failure. My shot would be tires causing the problem. How many miles have you on the GY's and given the tires have worn down a bit to harder rubber.. I suspect tires.
