Had Magnaflows installed yesterday, now BIZZARRE sound when accelerating hard...!

OK, I'm officially cursed... I decided to cut my bumper and install Maganflow mufflers and quad SS tips until I find the exhaust system that sounds like I'm looking for... Sooo, had the Muffs and tips installed yesterday... The tips came out nice, quad round SS tips from Assured Performance... The Magnaflows on the other hand, aren't going to cut it in the long run... The sound at idle and low RPM cruising is more like a humm or drone than anything resembling a tuned muffler... Then, on the way home last night, I left a light on highway 67 and punched it... As the RPM's climbed, the mufflers put out an increasingly loud, sport exhaust note up to a certain point, then a sound came out of the back of the car that I can only describe as a Freight Train like whistle... "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" until I backed off the throttle... My wife in the passenger seat looked at me and said, "WTF was that...?" I had no answer... Still don't... The sound is reproduceable every time I floor it and it reaches a certain high RPM, and stays there until I let off the throttle... I have no clue at this point but I'm assuming it's related to the mufflers of tips somehow... UNBELIEVABLE... Dare I ask if anyone else has experienced this nightmare..?

Did you put a decal of a cigar-smoking woodpecker in your window?

You already know my position on the Magnaflows. That drone between 1800-2000 was completely unbearable for me. As for the Woo-Woo at full throttle, I'm wondering if it's air whistling past the exhaust tips, due to the round shape. Not unlike when you blow into a Pepsi bottle or your uncle Jethro playing in a jug band.

The next set of used E55 mufflers I come across, I'll shoot them your way.

Sorry to hear about the problems.

Yeah, also sorry to hear about the mufflers. Hopefully you can pick up a set of AMG's at some point.

Why did you go with them anyway? You seemed pretty gun shy about going with something too loud.

That is exactly how to do it!!! My salesmanager has a 2006 SL55 with a Kleeman kit on it and he used to have magnaflows and it use to make the highest pitched noise. He later went back to Amg mufflers and it sounds so much clearer and deeper.

i have magnaflows w/ quad tips and I have no problems with them. did you leave your stock resonators ? or did you just add the mufflers and tips? My setup is: removed 2nd cats , X Pipe to 2 BMW Resonators (quieter then magnaflow reso.) ,to dual magnaflows to quad tips. this was after 3 diff setups i finally stuck with this. But i will be swapping the primary cats for the 2nds and that will be the last setup.

That's a cool setup. Where did you get the idea to try the BMW resonators?

I simply had the Muffler shop cut off the stock exhaust and add the Magnaflow exhaust and 2 SS tips/side... Left the resonators and cats alone... The Magnaflows sound clips I heard weren't too far from what I was looking for but sound clips can be deceiving... The Magnaflows are really about as loud as my stock exhaust which was E500 4-matic with Avante Garde Sport Package... Not sure if the stockers were a sport muffler from Mercedes or not but the Magnaflows aren't much louder when on the gas... At idle, they sound like a constant humm, nor definition or rumble at all... Going through the gears at normal acceleration, they are pretty mellow... As soon as I reach cruising speed, or about 1800 - 2000 RPM, the muffs go back to a humm or drone... When I accelerate hard, the exhaust note picks up as RPM's rise, then at some point, I get a loud "WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO" until I lef off the gas, mostly to avoid further embarassment... As stated above, Benz-o-rama suggested that noise might be wind blowing past the exhaust tips, which are fairly large by the way... I'm wondering what the fix is for that...? I think I'll keep looking for a exhaust off a SL55 AMG, CLS55 AMG or E55 AMG, or maybe just bite the bullet and buy the REMUS Sport exhaust...

I agree with Benz - o - Rama....it's the air passing through or over the exhaust tips....I experienced that when I had twin tips on my CLK....I just went back to the exhaust shop and changed the tips....sorry bro.

as far as MagnaFlows...they will be 'OK' for a small period -- depending on how much you drive -- then they eventually 'lose' the inner packing and become a droning muffler -- especially if you remove the resonators.

if you're looking for sound, then the AMG mufflers will be your choice or if you want little sound (above stock) but still performance, then Remus will be a good choice....hopefully this helps.

I know AAA Muffler in L.A. sells Remus mufflers at a good price (since they install many of them).

Thanks, Matt, will do... The prices I've seen aren't unreasonable but there is approx. a $400 difference between the Remus Sport system that fits my car depending on the tips choice... The single oval tips are priced reasonably I guess but the quad round tips are about $400 more... That's a considerable price jump just for different tips... When I put Billy Boat PRT's on my Corvettes, the systems were all about the same price and there were 4 tips choices just for reference...

Had the Magnaflows now for several weeks and they aren't going to cut it for long... 1800 - 2000 RPM is maddening, and the WOT whistle is just plain embarassing... Even my wife, who doesn't pay much attention to such things, said it sounds pretty funny driving behind me heading home the other night.... Soo, looking at Remus at the moment... Can't find a sound clip of an E500 with Remus though... Don't want to make ANOTHER mistake if I can avoid it... No AMG exhausts to be found on any Forum at the moment either...

do you happen to still have your stock mufflers?? if so, put those back on with the quad tips -- and just delete the resonator.

In hindsight, that might have been a better plan. Unfortunately, re-installing stock muffs aren't an option at this point...
