Should I remove a 1/2 quart of oil?

I changed oil in my E500 yeatarday and didn't have my doc's and relied on the old memory and added 8.5qts. After the change the com didn't have an "overfull" error so I figured I'm fine. Looking thru my paperwork I see it only calls for 8qts. should I remove 1/2 a qt?

Thanks,

Yes, overfilling is not good for the engine.

Can you explain why it isn't good plus it's only 16oz's will this small amount really hurt anything?

I cannot understand why too much too is bad for the engine. Someone here said that it foams too much and reduces the lubricating effects on the engine internals. The owner's manual said not to overfill as well.

When I did overfill once the engine light came on and the message specifically asked me to remove engine oil so if you have no light you are OK.

I think all E series cars from 2007 and newer all have the old engine oil dipsticks restored. It is the sensible thing to do.

MB did not want mere owners to touch their cars. They only wanted authorized dealerships to do so.

If there is to much in the car, the display will say so. If the car says all is well, then it is.

Good point. Reading the original post again, the owner seems to state that the car computer does not claim too much oil (does not ask to reduce oil), it should not have too much oil then. I interpreted the owner confirming that it has half a litre too much oil but he actually was just referring to the amount put in.

I would check from the cluster computer the oil level, if it says it is OK, it would be fine (if it is close, it might give warning while driving). I assume this car does not have a dipstick that could be used to check the level.

+1 check the level in the MFD, if it comes up red in color and states over filled then yes remove .5 qt.

I overfilled my 430 once and gas mileage suffered -5mpg, I guess any oil over the windage tray will hit the crankshaft and cause losses.

Isn't it 8 liters? If so, 8.5 quarts is about right. I might be wrong, though.

You're correct, to much oil will foam and reduce lubrication. This is caused from the crankshaft remaing submereged in the level of overfilled oil while rotating in the sump causing the foaming. When it's at the correct level the oil in the sump is circulating throughout the engine not allowing the crankshaft to remain submerged.

When I did overfill once the engine light came on and the message specifically asked me to remove engine oil so if you have no light you are OK.

The "overfilled" message did not display leaving me to believe the 1/2qt isn't a problem.

DB, my response to your post was me questioning your reasoning behind your statement(no pun intended) I am hoping the extra 1/2qt isn't a prob because I drain my oil from the pan and getting a 1/2qt out will be a hassle. Then again if it is necesarry I will drain it, like I said above I am not getting an overfill message on the com.

According to the manual the E320's capacity is 8.5qts/8.0l and the E500's is 8.0qts/7.5l. Go figure, bigger engine less oil?

In all honesty, you've probably spent more time posting re this than it would have taken to remove the half quart. I say better safe than sorry.

General consensus is to be on the low side vs high side.

I would leave it alone. Next time just add 8 qts.
