E500 Gas Mileage

I'm consistently getting about 10.5 miles/gallon. Originally was getting 9 before I took it in to MB Service. They told me this was normal.

The window sticker says 16 city, and I believe 25 highway.

I'm not out there pushing this car around like a Porsche. Any comments?

MBUSA site shows 16/23MPG for City/Highway estimates. It certainly does sound like your gas consumption is much higher than what is published. Leslie, are you manually shifting the transmission a lot and driving with a lead foot?

Gas consumption should improve as you put more mileage because the engine/drive train gets broken in.

Other E500 owners, please post your experience.

Unhappy Bring on the Diesel

Wow, maybe I'll wait for the Diesel E coming to the US next fall, especially if it is available with 4-matic. (I suspect gas mileage on the E500 would even be worse with the 4-matic option.) Gas prices just went up 10 cents a gallon this week and I hear oil is now at $33 dollars a barrel on the commoditiy markets with reserves now confirmed to be their lowest in a long time. Brings back memories of the gas rationing some years back when the hottest Mercedes was the 240D here in the US.

35 mpg with the US Turbo Diesel

I'm hearing 35 mpg quoted for the new US spec Turbo Diesel that was supposedly announced this week. If I recall correctly, with the diesel engines there is less variance on mileage per gallon so one could expect a true 35 mpg which is 3 times better than the 10mpg reported for the E500.

Its true.

3500 miles later and my computer shows my E270 CDI has averaged 33mpg for total time of ownership. And I do drive it hard, and manual shift using + and - on the auto.

As I state in an earlier post, I chose a CDI becasue in UK fuel is $6 gallon; added to the fact that these cars really shift.

The E320 CDI will certainly be worth looking at when it enters the US.

I am averaging 18-19 mpg with a mix of mostly city and some highway driving. "Moderate foot" on the pedal, 1500 miles.

Most Interesting

Wow. No lead foot...and almost never manually shift. Obviously a problem. Will have to contact the service department again.

Do you shut off engine often (tkake really short trips?). This takes a lot off the gas mileage and especially so in city driving.

The octane rating of the gas you use will affect the mileage. The higher the rating the better (say 93, 94 instead of 89,91,92)

Mileage should improve with break in proceding.

City driving with a lot of brake stopping and taking the "hilly" route will adversely affect mileage.

Not bad at all. It looks like MB overestimated fuel economy. It should be 18/26 at least.

If they had "underestimated" we all could saved $1K in gas guzzler tax...my understanding is that they were only off by 1mpg to save the gg tax

Confirm

Value,

Lot's of starts and stops, high-octane gas with infrequent to moderate freeway driving. Based on the other reports, still seems low.

Leslie, I would have the dealer check it out if you are getting only about 10+ mpg based upon that driving.

Keep us posted.

Does anyone know why MB killed the 430 engine in the E Class? It has no gas guzzler tax, and its hp.and torque numbers are not much different than the 500 engine.

You mean the same 430 is still used for other models, like S430? Probably, MB has intension to replace it by 350 and diesel for E class.

I assume that is imperial gallons.

1 imperial gallon = 4.546 L
1 US gallon = 3.785 L

Hence, your E 270 CDI's 33 MPG overall would be 27.5 MPG US.

Don't expect a miracle; the V-6 CDI will be thirstier than the inline 5 CDI, so perhaps 25 US overall in real world usage is to be expected.

There is a menu option that allow you to monitor the gas milage as you drive. You may try setting the display in the spedometer to this menu and notice that when you just start moving the car after turn-on, the milage is very low and as you drive it gets better. Just starting the car takes a lot of gas.

Make that..
Just turning on the car consumes a lot of gas.

Leslie, I probably forgot to mention.... air conditioning "ON" is a drain on gas mileage. If its on with an open window or sunroof, its an even bigger drain. Otherwise I would hate to think that you have a brake draging.

Any noise from the rear at speed?

Leslie, I'm seeing about the same mileage and my guess is a dragging brake.

Do you hear any brake noise from the rear when at speeds above 40mph.

Assuming all fans and radio off.

Jeff and Jabo:

1. Have the speedo settings on the dash to look at gas mileage. It's really low when I start--like 6 mpg (US). Once I get going it gets better, but not to the level that others on this board experience.

2. No brake noise over forty.

3. Have used the AC sparingly.

Compared to our previous 3 series Bimmer, our costs for gasoline have gone up $300/month on top of what we were paying before with the same driving regimen!

Can't imagine what it would be like if I really pushed the car around...
