Keyless card lost and need a new one....

I need a card for my keyless system. The car is an 03 SL55. I was looking to buy one on ebay for about $30.

I just read this on another forum. Is this correct info?

"DO NOT BUY KEYS FROM EBAY!! It is a total waste of money. Each Mercedes can only have 8 key programmed against it (incl. Keyless Card). As the keys have a single programmable EPROM there are specialist tools required to programme a key. Once a key has been programmed the code can not be erased. If you did manage to get a blank key you would need to know the correct codes as well as be able to clone it using an IR programmer ($2000), There are after market programmers from China like the (AK-400) that actually require you to de-solder the EPROM and place it on the NEC board then it will read the data and allow you to make a clone, you need to be advanced in soldering and have some programming skills.
I have attached a youtube video for your reference:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QE5kL...eature=related

On top of the IR Key you also have the traditional metal (emergency) key that need to be laser cut and is also available through Mercedes.

So for the sake of a few hundred, don’t bother!!!"

So if you buy a used card you can't program it to your car?

Then why do all those people sell them on Ebay? Every one of those people buying the cards get screwed?

Yessir, EVERY SINGLE ONE.

They are only good for parts or the case, but as a complete key, you are SOL, you must absolutely get it from a dealer.

I heard there are some places online that will sell them as well. You need to send them your reg and license copy first.

That is correct, but the online places are always a MB dealership. They are the only ones that can program/cut a key for you. Shopping online will most probably get you a better price, but nowhere near the $30 you saw on eBay. I do not have keyless, but did have a key made with the blade, I dont even remember where from, but it was online, cost about $100 or so, they have since gone up. I did send a copy of my registration and license, now that I think about it, not the smartest thing to do. You can also try your local dealership and see if they would match the online price.

Yup don't work. I got shafted once like that on ebay when buying a key for my 94 S420. They were such a**holes. I think the place was remotesuperstore or something. They have since been kicked off ebay and have their own site now.

Buying FOP from ebay makes sense for display purpose. You can take these keys on date to demonstrate that you are MB owner. I bought a key set for my 8yo son, so he could show boys in his class that he is MB driver.
