....and at the end of that thread: "Vette, Thanks again, your post made it clear and I got the oil changed successfully."
You're welcome.

Seriously, there are literally dozens of threads on this...... and on the net in general.
It is located towards the back of the engine compartment on the left hand side between the air filter housing and the firewall to the passenger compartment.
Yup that's it. The transmission is more rectangle with red tang on top. To remove it you break off the red tang push it down through the cap then remove the cap. For the oil cap on the dip stick tube it will just pull off.
I change oil in my E500 all the time the first times I drained and just refilled with correct fill. Last time I bought the mityvac and did the job in about 20 min including the filter change. No more crawling under to pull the plug for me on this one.

Looks like you have a 5 speed. The tube with the lock plug is the tranny, the round plug tube (that you can easily pull) is the oil. You can usually buy dipsticks on eBay cheaper than the dealer if you want a stick.
(you can always pull some out with your pump and look at it if you're in still in doubt.)

Curious about DIY oil changes...
1) When I used to do my own oil changes on other cars waaay back, I always remember a small magnet on that oil pan plug that would pick up any metal fragments floating around. Is this not a concern with the constant top side method?
2) How much does one save by doing it yourself. What do you guys pay for the Mobil 1 and filter?
3) I'm considering doing some basic service issues on my E320 Wagon. Any specific thread that would offer suggestions for the DIY-er?
Thanks,
Tom

2) about $40 - 18 for filter (MB Fleece) and oil at WALMART or Auto Store when on sale (I usually stock up at a good sale). Add in about a one time cost of $57 (extract only) to 75 (bi directional) at Amazon for a Mity Vac. I'd avoid teh cheap units - I have had good luck with Mity Vac.
3)A search will turn up a lot of DIY - I do breaks, aux battery, some filters myself. Some stuff, like tranny filter / fluid I pay for because the cost of a screwup is too high.

On my 2004 E500 (March production date), there's only the tranny tube. I've looked again for the past 20 mins and still couldn't find the engine dipstick tube. Is there any 04 E500 out there has two tubes (tranny and engine oil)?

stand on the passenger side of the car (not in front of the car, but on the side with your legs touching the fender), look for the black plastic knob on the left rear of the engine in reference to where you are standing, the knob should pull out easily.
