Tire Pressure Monitor

My tire pressure monitor is on the fritz. The dealer wants several hundred to check it and replace parts as needed. I'd rather defeat the function but dealer says they cannot do it due to federal law. Is thee a way to defeat this function to end messages that I could do (as I assume it is not unlawful for me to do it) Thanks

Not certain what your problem is however, repair may be as simple as replacing a malfunctioning wheel sensor if you are receiving Visit Workshop warning. Wheel sensors contain non-replaceable batteries, after replacement simply reactivate (using steering wheel controls completed by driving the vehicle) to relearn new sensor identification.

When a sensor or antenna problem is suspected remount wheel to different location, erase DTC and see if problem moves - front/rear, left/right antenna part #0018274801 (for comparison shopping, parts.com $66.70), sensor 0008224806 (128.80).

You can deactivate TPC however, you will get “tire pressure control reactivate” message each time you start the engine.

Not if you set it as NOT PRESENT.....

TPMS is a SAFETY system and no dealer in their right mind would disable/remove. Too much liability......

Set TPM as "Not Present"

Hi, I am also having problems with TPM 0n 2003 SL, three times to dealer and it still gives me the "go to shop" message. They want $240 per wheel to replace sensors, and still cannot guarantee that it will work without further repair.

I had not heard of the ability to set as "not present" ... how do you do that?

Go to tirerack.com and buy 4 sensors for about $250. The trick is to choose rims and tires for your car and then they ask you with TPMS or without. You choose with ..and then delete rims and tires. Friend of mine did it. Another way - just call to them and buy sensors only.

DTC (trouble code) is stored with function warning (i.e.: visit workshop) telling them exactly what needs attention furthermore battery life can be checked with DAS.

Most common cause for this warning is signal transmission between all or at least one wheel sensor usually caused by the sensor battery. Battery life is approximately 7 years however recommended replacement benchmarks at 5 years.

There are several posts on this forum stating the the STAR system can be used to program that the tire pressure monitor system is not present. THis would get rid of the annoying warning and avoid the expensive repair. However the dealer and at least one independent I went to would not do it citing "liability" because of the current US laws requiring sensors. I have serious doubts that the regulation would cover a system which was an option in 2004 as the law was passed subsequent to that. However, I have not had the time/desire to research it. Even if I find that they are wrong, their mandate from on high won't allow them to do it. Thus, in order to disable the warning, one must find a shop with the STAR system which is not governed by lawyers

TPMS

I have a 2003 W211 that does not have the TPMS but I'd like to add the feature to the car since I believe in it. Can it be done? The tire sensors I get- it's the addition of the monitoring function to the computer that may force a trip to the dealer.
Can I activate the function myself?

I got all my Beru sensors from Belle Tire in Michigan. $87 shipped.
They also have an eBay store. Same price on eBay. They are an authorized Beru national
distributor.

As far as adding the MB OEM system to an 03 the cost will freak you out. You might look
into the system made by Orange. They have a few models and the system is very accurate.
Some are les than $200. Less than $300 installed.

The dealer has quoted me $420 to replace 1 sensor which he claims to have a dead battery. I'm getting the "visit workshop" message, but when I go to view the pressure, all 4 tires are reading and showing a good value.

I have the extended warranty, but he is claiming since it is a dead battery it is not covered. I'm seeing in this thread that I can obtain a new sensor for under $100. So if that is the case, can someone post how to replace the sensor? Is it pretty easy?

Try a Decent Tire shop...Most will have a Tool that WILL read the sensor
then you can replace the sensor I Know Firestone stores have the hand held tool to read the TPMS without breaking down the tire

As For Installing Factory Mercedes TPMS on a Vehicle that was NOT built with it...Yes It can be done ....I Did The W211 for the Wife..It Was NOT cheap...4 TPMS sensors, wire harness, control unit, and LOTS of Labor
as the wire harness goes to every corner of the vehicle to read the sensors

just I'm sure on this - is the sensor on the inside of the rim, in other words, I have to remove the tire off the rim, install the sensor and then put the tire back on the rim? If this is the case, then I'm thinking I don't have the equipment to do this myself...

I was hoping it was something I could just screw off and put the new one on without having to remove the tire, etc.

I was led to believe that it is part of the metal valve stem assembly, at the bottom of the whole thing. Also, on those metal TPMS stems you should only be running with plastic valve stem caps.

It was mentioned so many times that it is expensive to retrofit the system on a car that hasn't been shipped with one. But how much is it actually???

For those who haven't seen it, there is some training material for the system at http://www.mercedestechstore.com/pdf...2006-20-02.pdf

I think it will answer most of the questions, except for the ones about costs.

Question TPC antenna wire

Here is a new angle on TPC problems. A rat has chewed through the wire connecting the TPC monitor antenna in the front wheel arch. Discovered this by chance when cleaning out the water drains. TPC has been giving continuous "reactivate" messages and now I understand why!
Is it possible to rejoin the wire or is it too complicated a type of wire? (It seems to have a shield of sorts.)

I would recommend replacing harness: left part #2114405606, right 2114405706 (U.S. cost $13.80)

Sensor batteries last 5 years give or take!

new Beru (oem) model # RDE 004 315 mhz(US) The UK takes a 433mhz frequency. The 41mm size Mercedes valve stem is Beru model # RDV 001. The valve holds the sensor in the wheel rim. All info at this site. www.beru.com great suplier for valves www.TPMSwholesalers.com sensor $77 free ship. Just bought new set for new rims, worked like a champ, no problems on the simple reset.

For the record - I solder-joined this wire and refitted it, with heatshrink protection. The system is working perfectly now.

I have a problem. I changed the rims, now I wear these:

Sensor was changed for workshop, but 3 of them lose air. Someone knows what happens?

Will changing a tire sensors to other tires is problematic? Is it necessary to buy new sensors?
