I made a mistake and let my 17 year old daughter drive my E350 the other night. She got home and complained that on her way home it was jerking, whining, and when she took her foot off the gas the car would slow down to a crawl. I figured out she must have hit the shifter and put it in 1st gear and driven like that for about 4-5 miles. I doubt that she went over 30 or 40 and then slowed down to 20-30 for most of the trip.

I could not feel any damage while driving the next morning. My sense is that this probalby was not good for the car, but probably did not hurt it either.

Any ideals?

I had two optionss with my daughter. 1. explain how the shifter works, or 2. ask her how she enjoyed her final drive in my car...

You could tell her that kick down makes it shift up the gear.

I prefer the other choice about the final drive in the car. You don't need to see your car destroyed in any manner to get what I'm saying. She needs a Honda, that's what my 17 year old is getting...

As my wife and I are leaving on Saturday for Hong Kong for a week, there is no way she will not be driving my car while I am gone, so I showed her how to work the shifter...I found the discussion about shifting automatically when the car is red-lined to be interesting. I had no idea. On the other hand I do not think I have ever been close to red-lining the engin, only my daughter gets to do that.

+1. She can only appreciate the finer things in life if used properly.

Get her a 70's era Toyota Landcruiser FJ40. It takes four minutes to get up to 30mph and white knuckle speed is 50mph. Can't hurt the darn thing; curb it and the curb looses. The jump seats in the back can be removed in a couple of minutes, leaving only one passenger seat which ensures that she won't be the herd's chauffeur. I really miss mine, it always brought me home.

Perfect car for a 17 year-old teenage girl

She'd be 'Miss Popular' in no time. Uh, huh.
