Exclamation Changing Spark Plug Wires

Hi guys,

I have a 2005 E500 with 84,000 miles.

I recently had my spark plugs changed couple of months ago. Even though car is running as smooth as it can get, I decided to do some tests. I took to a dealership and had them run an engine smooth test.

Couple of the cylinders were showing numbers out of normal range and they recommend that I change spark plug wires as well.

Dealer is quoting wires around $500. I found the wires on autohausaz for $164 while the list price is $531, These wires are made by karlyn-sti.

Has anybody put aftermarket wires on your car? Where did you get them and how much did you pay?

I recently installed a set of STi wires in a W220.

There is a slight difference between the OEM and the STI wires that I installed (see attachment). The metal housing that is on the OEM wires (the part that you grab with the 17mm wrench to remove the wires from the plugs) isn't as long on the STI wires. Therefore, there is nothing but rubber to grab hold of, so removing the STI wires from the plugs might require a different removal tool. I hope that I never have to find out.

One of the STI wires was slightly shorter than the OEM, resulting in a bit of a stretch to go from the plug to the coil. I've been meaning to call STI to find out if they mistakenly packaged a wrong wire with the kit.

Aside from that, the STI wires snapped on tight to the ignition coils and plugs and the engine seems to run fine.

The price you mention sounds about right. I ordered mine from German Imported Parts. http://www.germanimportedparts.com/

Hope this helps.

No I haven't used aftermarket parts on anything in the MB.

Note each wire has it's own part number and is different. $160 or so isn't bad for a full set of wires.

Thanks for the advice man! I would assume when I am changing the wires to take one by one and then go and measure the same length with the new ones, that way I dont end up confused which ones go where

Yeah, you could measure them or you could do like I did and mark each old wire as it was removed, then line up all of the old wires side-by-side to the new wires. No need to sweat it though. It's easy to tell which ones match.

don't do it. the aftermarket wires won't last 84k. i have seen them short out after 10k. they are only good as a band aid.

I also have the wires with the shorter metal sleeve. I had the most horrible time trying to remove the wires from the plugs. I tried different removal tools, including the Harbor Freight Tool, but that can only grab the rubber part of wire, it would strech the rubber, and nick it. Any more force would definetly have cut the wires. Finaly I just had to rely on finger strength to remove the wires, ending up with many scapes on the back of my hand.

Does anyone know the part #, or where to find, the tool to remove those after market wires (with shorter matal housing)?

I just ordered this set which seems to have the longer metal sleeve. Has anyone tried this brand, Prestolite?
