Did the 07 Facelift improve Pano roof internals?

I've been focusing my search solely on cars that DO NOT have Pano or a trunk closer, mainly because I've heard horror stories about each. While the trunk closer is pretty rare, the Pano seems fairly common. As nice as it may be, I don't want to have to spend 3K to have a working sunroof once the thing breaks. Given so many parts of the 211 were altered during the facelift, does anyone know if the Pano roof mechanism benefited from any of those changes?

Thanks!

I have no problem with my pano roof, I'm happy I got it.

I don't know if it changed any. What problems have you been hearing about the roof? I have the pano roof and I have had no problems. I see tons of cars with the standard roof. I think the pano makes the car stand out

I have pano and trunk and have never heard about any major issues on the 07+ W211 pano or trunk closer.

Love both features. Won't get a car without them ever again. Same with Keyless Go .. well unless its a Toyota .. haha.

Well from reading various 211 forums, it seems that the panoramic roof is prone to failures that can be very expensive to fix. Previous posters have mentioned that dealers often claim that an entire replacement is the only fix.

As for the trunk closer, I've read that you cannot close the trunk without it. So if it fails, you have to get it fixed before you can use your trunk again. Something like a trunk closer seems so unnecessary, that if it ever broke, I probably wouldn't feel compelled to fix it. Failing in such a manner as to disable the trunk would be a poor design, and I hope I'm wrong in my assumptions.

You gotta pay to play ..

The trunk closer is very handy. I have closed the trunk by mistake by hand without using the buttons and it closes, so I imagine if the electronics failed, I'd still be able to do so.

I love the pano roof .. hell get it, don't ever close the shades .. it really just opens up the environment inside the car. If it stays closed, who cares if it fails?

You can close or open it manually with the latch (unless the car's fully locked.)

Electronic trunk close is a nice option. If your hands are full and you need to shut the trunk (and also lock the entire car via central locking which is part of the trunk close package), it's super convenient to do it from buttons on the trunk.

The electronic close on the driver's door (standard) works the same way, but inside the car (and with no central locking button since you're already in the car, of course.)

I'm not quite sure of the problems that they're experiencing but I love it. No problems on my end

i don't have it on the e but on our cl500 it failed, the latching mechanism or something. also that has the vacuum sucking system so that might add to it. i think with the 07+ trunk closer, you can close via remote as well.

in regards to pano, the only problem i had was creaks in the beginning. had it lubed at the dealership a while back and it is good. haven't had problems since. it think with the 07+ models, you now get the auto close feature for both glass and cover. with mine, 04, you can only auto open vs you have to hold it to close it. i think steve at mbenznl has info on updating the unit.

Did you mean to say that for 07+ the sunroof has automatic one button close? I need to hold the button for my sunroof to close completely and would really like to figure out a way to enable auto close with one button so I can keep both my hands free for driving the car!

I also would like to know how to do this. My '09 requires me to hold the button as well.

Anyone know if there is a way for one touch close of the sunroof without having to hold the button? All my previous cars have done this and it is annoying to have to hold the button for the roof to close.

Hold the climate control recirculate button and it'll close everything in your car, including the Pano roof.

BTW.. I bought the the car with Pano and found out personally that it doesn't appear to have "updated internals". Mine rattles (I believe it's the shades that rattle when retracted and spooled up), and I have a cracking/ single pop noise whenever I have torsional stress on the car. Funny enough, it happens way worse when it's hot out, which obviously has to do with the expansion and contraction of the metal in the car.

I've looked at all the relevant TSBs, and none cover the near constant subtle rattle of the sunroof shades at low speeds..

BTW I had this issue when I picked my 2007 CPO E550 with the Pano roof. My local deal Euro Motorcars in Bethesda had the car for a day and a half with a tech apparently making adjustments and driving the car multiple times and they somehow fixed all the rattles. You might need to take the car into a shop with someone who really knows the pano roof internals. The tech who drove with me so I can point out the sounds knew right away what I was talking about.

Having said all this MB really should have designed a better pano roof. It is completely unacceptable for the pano roof to develop rattling noises, especially out of warranty. I probably could not have afforded (or rather justified) a tech spending 5 hours on the car to fix the rattling sunroof if I did not have warranty coverage.

The Tysons dealer just blew it off and said "Could not reproduce issue". I have to go back to them and get my power steering hose replaced under warranty, maybe I can get them to look at it then.

Drive over to Euro Motorcars in Bethesda and talk to Bill Gross -- it's just a few miles away from Tyson's. Why give the Tyson's dealer work when they are not taking care of ressolving your issues? Drive the car with a tech so you can point out the sound and they understand what it is and where it is coming from.

I asked the dealer about this when I purchased my 2009 E350's and noticed this feature was different from my 2001 C240. The answer I got was that for a few years now, MBUSA disabled this feature in ALL U.S. MB's due to safety legislation that doesn't allow the sunroof auto-close feature (at least the way MBUSA implemented it). Other countries still have this feature enabled (or so I've heard).
