Just curious of how many of you wait for the light to go out or not and why?? I do, its only abut 5-7 seconds, and figure its there for a reason. When I went to test drive some, the salesmen got in and just started them, didnt care if it was 15 degrees outside.

Wait for it to go out and I also wait about 1-2 mins to turn it off after driving. Mine is only on for a couple seconds as well, even in cold weather.

Why do you wait to turn in off?

To keep the turbo from coking up. I usually wait until the EGTs are below 350 degrees or about 1-2 mins on my MB.

You don't have to wait for the turbos to spool down on newer cars.

I will give you that Mercedes using Mobil-1 might have an advantage with not having problems with coking on the new cars. I've been driving diesels for the last 20 years, mostly 1-ton trucks and its always been recommended to let the EGTs cool down to under 300 degrees before shutting them down. I can't say on the Mercedes whether I "need" to or not, but I continue to do a cool down before I turn the engine off. It can't hurt. I use a cool-down timer on my current truck.

the Glow plug light. Considering your location, you may never see it.I have keyless go, so the lights come on so quickly and disappear, I'm not sure which one is actually the glow plug light.

Oh well... After wasting 50 years of my life, why would I bother about 2 more seconds for a glowplug light?

If it stayed on longer than it takes me to turn the key, I would!

Even on cold days it doesn't seem to stay on for more than a second or two.

My diesel P/U will stay on for up to 10 seconds on really cold days.
