The only starter I know that will not compromise your factory system (and not give up a key fob) is the smartkey starter by midcityengineering. they also offer a 2-way LCD long range version as well.

You can install an alarm, but it would be quite a pain on these newer MBs (mostly starting in 2000). A CAN-BUS interface kit will be required for the alarm to communicate with the MB computer. I don't know what else would be required (never had experience with anyone installing these on MBs). You could do a remote starter but would end up giving up a remote fob (key in a box style), which I DO NOT recommend. You comprise the factory security system and you are leaving the key in the car (which a thief can find and start you car with).

With the vehicles that use the IR smartkey you cant even do that... (because the IR signal never makes it to the sensor)..
