Tranny Pump whining noise?

Today getting my car for a tranny flush and the service advisor says my car need a new tranny pump because they heard a high pitch whining noise. I have heard that noise for a long time already and thought it was a normal pump sound but now they want $2800 to replace the pump. Is that a fair price and have any one experienced this issue before?

Pump noise is pretty normal. Mine does it and I have no problems.

Is the trans pump whine a high pitched whine that fades in at about 10 MPH & then fades away at about 40 or so, and seems to be close to the same pitch no matter what speed (within that range) you are going?

It's does slightly change with rpms but yes, it does fade with speed and with temperature ( a cold startup will be louder than a hot startup ).

Always had it since new... wonder If I should make them fix it under my MB ext. warranty, as I'm in my last year. Generally I hate when the dealership mucks about inside the transmission. I find they're never as good again. (FrankenTrans)

What exactly does the trans pump do? I've always had that whine on start up and sometimes at low speed, but always assumed it was normal. Now the pitch of the pump sounds a little different (almost like it's struggling). Trans fluid was flushed by an indy about 10k ago, and the indy said everything looked fine. 2007 E3504M has 89k on the clock. Runs like a top (knock on wood).

That's what I had assumed as well. Here is exactly what the dealer wrote:

Service Trans Per Factory Recommendation Auto Trans Service Includes Remove Trans Oil Pan, Replace Auto Trans Filtergasket Clean Trans Oil Pan And Reinstall Oil Pan Replace Up To 5 Qts $309.95

Cause: No Service Performed
no Service Performed Before Service Began, Technician Noted Loud Transmission Front Pump Whine indicating Front Pump Overheating. Recommended to Perform Replacement of Transmission Front Pump. Guest Advised.

Like you guys said, I have always noticed that when starting the vehicle and after a few seconds it will go away itself. So I always thought that was a normal sound. Can someone reassure us that is just dealer's way of making money?

seems like they're fishing for $$. I have yet to hear a benz that doesn't make the same noise. How could the pump be overheating if it's submerged in fluid? That's just dumb.

Also, don't flush the fluid. Just get a good couple drain & fills. I'd never let anyone put that damn machine on my car.

IF you use an NON-MB fluid in this application it is possible to have unusual noises from a pump due to the change in lubrication characteristics. If the correct fluid/filter was installed and you have pump noise with no air entrapment you may need a new pump. Note: it is hard to diagnose on line noise without hearing. It may be ok.

But my car has never replaced the tranny fluids before and like most people here stated, I have heard this noise for a long time and always thought it was a normal sound and it will go away after a few seconds.

jcat, I was thinking more or less the same. But honestly I didn't know there is a pump for the tranny to began with.
