ABS, ESP, inoperative - will not start
2007 E550
1. Used electronic key to open door (worked fine).
2. Put key in ignition and it will not turn. Received the messages shown in the pictures.
3. Car is in Park and shifter will not move
4. Can not lock car using electronic key (locked with manual key).
5. Daytime running lamps and side marker lamps will not go off.
I can not check fault codes as I can not turn the key to download data to my scanner. Too late today to get a brake switch (which, at $25, was a no brainer part to throw at the problem since it will probably need one some day anyway) which could very likely cause the Park Neutral warning message (see picture). I'm dead in the water and will likely disconnect the battery so it does not die due to to the 'lights on' situation
Dealer serviced about two months ago and they basically said don't come back for six months.
Has anyone experienced this? Except for lack of STAR diagnostic, I have no problem servicing any problems myself - I just need to know where to look and can do the R&R.

OK, it's dark out now and I can see that my brake lights are working (so not the switch). But I just noticed that I am getting a Malfunction warning (see attached) with the airmatic. I turned off the climate control and I can now hear a humming motor sound so possibly a leaking line or bladder.

Now an intermittent problem. Started several times in a row and then would not start several times in a row. Probably not Airmatic as when it did start the body came up.
Also, I was able to scan for OBD II fault codes and there were none.
Any diagnostic advise appreciated.

MBWorld Fanatic!
I'm sorry nobody is answering this, I honestly have no idea. I would go along your line of thinking and say it's probably not the brake light indicator switch since when I had that issue, the car started find and the only problem it had was that it wouldn't go into *drive* and it had an ESP Inoperative warning. It is probably something with an AirMatic sensor, unless the car is sitting on the ground I doubt anything is physically wrong, and I don't think it would cause this problem.

Thanks guys.
I didn't suspect the battery as the interior lights are bright. But easy enough to check for voltage and load.
Another oddity, when it goes into one of its 'fits' asking for the shifter to be in either Park (which it is) or Neutral, I can not lock the car with the electronic key. I had to manually lock the door and the dash lights stayed on rotating warning code screens all the while.

Out Of Control!!
With so many different electrical systems inop/intermittent, I would suspect a loose connector on a control module, or a loose ground.

To answer your question you need factory or equal software to read all the cars modules. Once you do that you will know what to fix!!
You have all sorts of issues and using a PITW approach will frustrate you and waste band width!!
PS:just because your brake light lights does not always mean that it is good!!

Thanks for all the replies.
For whatever reason the car started without incident today so I will call some of my Indy mech friends a see who can run a full diagnostic.
FWIW I pose questions here because more often than not it is the failing of the same component time and again which is the culprit. In that sense, the forum acts as a large data set and many time it is very effective to throw a few hundred dollars of parts at the problem if it has a high probability of success.
BTW I don't expect my OBD scanner to do anything but check components which some emissions related component. The info was provided to rule out certain systems as faulty.
Again, thanks for all the responses.
