"Brake Wear!" Message Too Early?

Hey guys,

My 2003 E500 just gave me the brake-wear message. The thing is, the brakes are all relatively new (about 5000mi on them) and I have not driven very hard on them. There is no squeaking at all.

Any idea why I am getting this message?

Thanks

Check the sensors to see if one of them was damaged and might have been tripped prematurely.

Sensor was most likely broken off and is either touching or has a build up allowing the sensor to trip. I had the issue this week. I ordered pads and looked at them after to find out they didn't need replacing.

What would it cost just to fix the sensor? Will it hurt anything if I just leave it be?

About $10.00 if you do it.

Yeah, about $10 or less and maybe 15 minutes. There is nothing wrong with leaving it, but why not fix it?

Thanks guys.

I know very little about cars but am a big DIYer. Could any direct me to a how-to, directions, or relevant diagram?

Thanks

From memory...

Take the wheel off. Look behind the caliper for the sensor (youll see the wire). Disconnect and put a new sensor in. Put the wheel back on.

Haha well I can certainly handle that. Any suggestions for a parts supplier (both for this sensor and in general)?

Thanks again!

That I am unsure of. I remember when I lived in PoDunk NoWhere that the local Advance Auto had a sensor in stock. No Mercedes dealer for miles. I usually use whatever comes with the brakes I install.

It is most likely the brake pad wear sensor as everybody else indicated.

Here is the link for the part:

Make sure the brake fluid is full.

That would throw a code? I have the same issue, it didn't occur to me this was possible.

It probably won't throw a code but would give a check brake type alarm. Almost all cars do. Just open hood and check the fluid, be SURE to use the correct fluid in the owners manual failure to use the correct fluid can be VERY expensive.
