WOW!!!! What a car!!!!

My wife and I picked up our 04 E500 Tuesday, and all that I can say is......WOW!!! it's such a nice driving car, but the learning curve on the COMAND system is pretty steep, but I 'm up to the task. What does stink is that it's freezing here and I'm dying to wash the car. I've got two coats of Zaino on it already . After all, you've got to protect your investment. Well, I'm off to order some bulbs to make all of the lamps look the same. Have a Happy and Safe Holidays!!!

Thanks fellows! THis car is pretty amazing, and drives great. We came out of a BMW and am so glad that we took the next step up in the food chain (so to speak). I told my wife that if this car drives as good as our old 2001 5 series, I'll be happy, but this one blows it away in every aspect. Sorry to make this short, but I've gotta go for a drive now............. Happy Holidays!!

'08 AM Vantage V8 - '03 E500
Just goes to show how perceptions can vary. We also went, involuntarily in our case, from an E39 5-series BMW ('97) to an '03 E500. The "involuntary" part came from a red-light runner that offed our 528i in August, and from Chris Bangle's misbegotten restyling that made us unwilling to consider an '04 5-series.

We don't think of the E500 as a step up. It's different, to be sure, but not - by our standards - better. Our 528i had a manual transmission and was a blast to drive, whether around town or on the twisties. It felt much smaller and lighter than it was. The E500 is a stolid critter that is happiest cruising along in a straight line. Cranking up the air suspension makes the ride stiffer but in no way turns the car into a BMW-style sports sedan. The car rates AAA as a status symbol, but is disappointing when it comes to the actual driving experience. We've placed a pre-order for a BMW 645Ci, which looks to have more acceptable styling than the new 5-series. The E500 was, *for us*, a mistake. It should make a nice down payment on the 645Ci.

None of this is intended to disparage people who are enraptured by their E500, or (specifically) people who had a 5-series and prefer their E500. There isn't any "right" or "wrong" in automotive taste (well, OK, a Hummer is always "wrong", but that's an exception.) So, please don't exercise your fingers defending your choice of a Mercedes. I'm not attacking you or your choice.

The E500 is directed at a different market than the Bimmers in reality. I bet that Stuttgart has the E owners as a few years older and more concerrned with comfort. A Bimmer just doesn't thrill me even after 2 test rides.
