The Best of Mercedes & AMG
We don't think of the E500 as a step up. It's different, to be sure, but not - by our standards - better. Our 528i had a manual transmission and was a blast to drive, whether around town or on the twisties. It felt much smaller and lighter than it was. The E500 is a stolid critter that is happiest cruising along in a straight line. Cranking up the air suspension makes the ride stiffer but in no way turns the car into a BMW-style sports sedan. The car rates AAA as a status symbol, but is disappointing when it comes to the actual driving experience. We've placed a pre-order for a BMW 645Ci, which looks to have more acceptable styling than the new 5-series. The E500 was, *for us*, a mistake. It should make a nice down payment on the 645Ci.
None of this is intended to disparage people who are enraptured by their E500, or (specifically) people who had a 5-series and prefer their E500. There isn't any "right" or "wrong" in automotive taste (well, OK, a Hummer is always "wrong", but that's an exception.) So, please don't exercise your fingers defending your choice of a Mercedes. I'm not attacking you or your choice.
