Cheap trick to installing LEDs without issues!

Hey all,

Between my two W211's and a W209, I've tried all the canbus, resistor, regular LED combinations, until it hit me a few days ago working on my E500....why not add a factory bulb in parallel to the LED. That way you know for SURE that it'll trick the computer...no need to worry about resistor ohms, wattage, etc.

For the interior, I added one 194 bulb in the whole series for the footwell lights. I bent the 194 bulb wires, slipped them onto the connections under the drivers feet. If you bend the bulb back over the connector, there is a lot of empty space under the dash so the bulb has a ton of free space around it and it wont be close to touching anything.

Its been working PERFECT for nearly a week now. The LEDs I am using are the regular (not canbus) cheap-o Hong Kong imports from eBay. Not a single flash, bulb-out or anything, and it cost me 30 seconds of work! Its reversible in the same amount time. I have the ambient mode, full brightness with doors open, no flashing and they shut off with the other lights just as they should.

See picture below for a visual.

I know that people have had issues with doing the trunk LEDs as one would always flash, so I will try this method in the trunk as well and report back. I am almost certain that it will work like a charm. I'll report back.

NOTE: Try this at your own risk. I highly advise making sure that the bulbs will have enough space to cool properly and that they don't touch other wires, etc. I assume no liability for any issues anyone may experience attempting this.

I JUST tried it in the trunk and VOILA! It works! No flickering, nothing.

I put the 194's on both sides and folded them forward toward the LED bulb that way they sit nicely in that indent away from everything.

Its been 2 hours and i opened the trunk quite a few times to test them, and not one flicker.

Basically fold the bulb in opposite direction of how i have it in the above pic. I removed the plastic cover to test all the positions and thats the best way.

Let me know how it goes!

Sounds good!

All my interior bulbs are regular LEDs, no canbus/error-free b/s.

For the dome and doors, didnt even need to add anything. Just plain old LEDs work 100% fine.

The only concern (if its a concern for you) the under the door bulbs are slightly illuminated as soon as you put the key in but go off wirh key off. I had it this way for a while then when i was bored attampted to correcr and that i solved with a 1W-1000ohm resistor from radioshack. It works like factory and the 1000ohm resistor stays very cool. Barely warm to touch after 3-5mins
