I'm Thinking About Purchasing An Extended Warranty

when my e500 comes in... has anyone purchased a warranty from mercedes and how much did you end up paying for it... How much off the asking price can I expect see??? We usually keep our cars for about 7 or 8 yrs and with all the gremlins I'm thinking It may be a wise purchase (if not peace of mind)....
Thanks for your input.....

If you have not purchased the extended warranty , why not wait until the car is just about 11 mos old and then do it....as long as it is under 1 year then it can be done anytime.........the dealer in calif. seems to have the best price............just a suggestion. I have my in service day marked for summer 2004.

I as you will keep this car and therefore hedge the uncertain demons that may come from years/miles with the computer systems.

Derek.

Derek, it is true that you have you 12 months to purchase the Mercedes-Benz Premium Extended Warranty from your in-service date.

Lisa Lehrbaum is definitely the way to go. She saved me a grand on an (factory authorized) extended warranty for my AMG. She is the finance manager for an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer in Chico.

She is great to work with, but DO NOT wait until the last minute! If she is on vacation or buried with other work, your application may sit in a stack for some time. Give yourself 6-8 weeks to allow her to get it all processed timely.

You will same money AND have a stress-free transaction

i see a great advantage, and thats to see if your car has a lot of problems, if you are trouble free, you might say to yourself to just save yourself the money.

Ahhh... I see your point, but hell...You got 4 years or 50,000 miles to work out the gremlins and electrical issues, so why buy it at all if this was your main reason for purchasing the warranty... If they can't work out the bugs within the original warranty then I would dump the car for sure... I'm thinking about purchasing the extended waranty for alot more than just gremlins....

Well there are a couple of reasons really.

1) Opportunity cost of your money, that extended warranty won't do you any good until you need to use it.

2) If you for some reason decide that this is just not the right car for you then you won't want that extended warranty you're not going t use since you won't have the car. (e.g. if you win the lotto and go for the SLR)

3) If you, and I hope this does not happen, you crash and total the car before the term then you just paid for something you're not going to use.

I know in some cases this warranty is refundable, But it will take you months to get a portion of your money back.

But if you are really really really really really sure, thats 5 times really, then go right ahead.

I got the warranty for $2K from MarcusBenz at House of Imports where I got the car. Thing is that HofI throws in a bonus with the warranty, where if there are no claims on the warranty in the 3 yrs it is effective (I bought the 3yr 50K extension for 7yr 100K total), then they will refund the $2K from HofI. I think the best deals I've heard were from Lisa at around $1700, but she did not get back to me after repeated calls and I said for $300 I would take the gamble, because if I'm lucky and have no issues then I get the $2K back.

I don't know if they offer this if you did not buy the car from them, and at least for the refund, I had to purchase the warranty the same time I bought the car....and yes it is the geniune MB warranty...not aftermarket 3rd party warranty.

UPDATE..... Lisa has contacted me about the extended waranty and quoted me $1790.00 for an additional 3 yrs and 50,000 miles for a total of 7 yrs and 100,000 miles. Seems like a good deal... I'm waiting for details to arrive about what the contract covers exactly... will keep you all posted...

That's true. I had that with my pre-nav car from House of Imports. The only problems were:

1) The finance guy was an idiot and kept saying that it is the geniuine MB warrany when it was not. I kept asking him "why does it say that it's by Deuche and not Mercedes?" and he kept saying that it's Deuche Bank that does it for Mercedes, etc. He charged $1800 for the extended warranty but it had a $250 deductible. He did say that I get the full refund if I don't make a claim. I didn't do enough of my homework before I got there.

2) When I got the nav replacement car, I asked for a refund on the extended warranty. They only gave me back like $1300. I asked the finance guy (not the same idiot...smart guy this time) "if I have 1 year to buy the extended warranty and it's less than 1 year right now, shouldn't I get a 100% refund since I could have waited until now to buy it?" Finance guy said "What you are saying makes all the sense in the world but I'm not sure what the extended warranty company will do".

3) New finance guy (although bright) said that the real MB warranty (he said that the one I got before was not MB and that they fired that old idiot finance guy (who was barely literate btw)) is expensive...like $3000 and he couldn't do it for $1800. So I passed on the deal.

I say that the new finance guy was smart because he could understand what I was telling him. The other guy simply lacked the mental capacity to understand anything beyond rudimentary math.

If they would have offered it for $2000 with the refund thing, I would have done it.

Rock.

Exclamation

Hi there

FYI

Just in case this was not mentioned before, the Mercedes extended warranty does not cover everything.

Based upon my earlier SBC incident, I too am looking into the extended warranty but based upon my initial finding, MB extended warranty (though has zero deductable) covers major power train stuff and not everything. The maintenance that comes with the original factory warranty is not there (that's a given) but I was surprise that other bumper to bumper stuff that comes with the original warranty may not be covered in the extended warranty (such as factory installed phone system and other electronics)

When I find out the complete list, will include here.

Educate yourself and obtain a copy of what the extended warranty covers. Your finance manager/warranty specialist can get this for you.

There is a big exclusion in the language of the MB factory extended warranty......"If the part is not listed, it is not covered".

The major stuff you have to worry about in engine and drivetrain mechanics and computers (yes, if covered). Climate control is covered.

One major thing NOT covered: COMAND and radio

I'm coming up on my one-year anniversary and appreciate all of this information, because I'm looking at buying the extended warranty.

I called my original dealer and got a quote of $1,760 for an extra three years and total of 100,000 miles. I don't know if I was able to get a lower quote because of my low mileage. I typically only drive 5,000 to 6,000 miles a year, and one week short of my anniversary, I'm just turning 4,700 miles on my car. I figure I'm their dream customer for an extended warranty! Seven years from now I'll probably have about 35,000 miles on my car.

Lisa quoted $1,790 for 3 years, and I'd swear she said 200,000 miles (she left the message on my machine and I haven't called her back yet). She said it would be an additional $200 for the no-use refund option, and she advised against it. The extended warranty does not include maintenance, the NAV system, the COMAND system, the telephone system, or the audio system, according to Lisa.

Also, I had my dealer fax me a copy of the warranty brochure, and the optical network components are also excluded, plus a bunch of other stuff. Like everything else, I expect they will make a profit on this product, and exclusions help them to do that.

I'll come back with more info if I learn anything new.

Again, thanks!

Hi Ricky

Many thanks for the info. Can you post which dealer in LA did you get your quote from?

THanks in advance

I was initially quoted around $3K and worked him down to $2K. I know it is original since it has the original MB logo on the documents. I don't know what I will get back, but the document I signed (a House of Imports document) says I get 100% if I have not made claims on the warranty. We'll see in 7 yrs

Yes, this is important, COMAND and radio, seat wear, and a bunch of other things are not covered. Also not covered is regular maintanence that is covered in the base warranty. But I bought it because it does cover the 7G tranny, engine, senstronic brakes, and Airmatic. I figure if things are going to go wrong over time, there is just a good chance they will go wrong in the new technologies like sens. brakes or airmatic, and those will be EXPENSIVE items to replace down the line. One failure in those systems will probably pay for the warranty.

I guess you have in writing that House of Imports will refund the $2K if you don't use the extended warranty at the end of 7 years. Can you confirm? If this is true, can you tell me who in House of Imports did you buy your warranty from.

Thanks

Yes, I have the refund agreement in writing, contact Mark Newton (MarcusBenz) at marcus_benz@hotmail.com. Keep in mind that I did buy the car from him, so I don't know if they will do the same deal for you, but I don't see why not. Mark will give you the name of the finance guy, it was a Paul something, but I don't remember the last name.
