Check engine light burnt out

2007 E350.
I suppose the previous owner before I got the car from my dad has tempered with the check engine light . Is it just as simple as replacing the bulb or have they done some irreversible damage?

I found out by pulling some codes it had and they weren't old stored codes, they came back just a while after driving for a bit.

Do I have to buy a new dash and code it to my car to match miles etc?

Instead of dealing with the problem, you take the CEL out. Who does that?

What were the codes? Early 2007 models still had the bad balance shafts and repairs could have been 4-6k at a dealer so I guess it made sense that the previous owner tried to dump it by getting rid of the light instead of fixing it.

Incorrect gear ratio and another code pointing to an O2 sensor.

I searched through the last few hundreds of posts and I can't find it. Do you remember the title? Even googling it I can't find much.

Site referred to above: https://mbworld.org/forums/e-class-w...emissions.html

You can pull IC to check internal condition. This site discusses backlighting repair via ribbon cable for CLS (same as 211): https://mbworld.org/forums/cls-coupe...hting-fix.html - read thread in its entirety.

Thank you. Looks like the LED has been ripped off from its soldering points.

What's the easiest fix? Does a new dash need to be coded to the car? Or can I just find a close enough mileage dash and put it in without any additional coding? Thank you for your responses so far.

I just talked to one of the dealers and they said if I bring a used instrument cluster in, it will be a 350-450$ labor fee to code it to the car which means change miles to match mine , but from their experience it's hit and miss; what that basically means, some work some don't, but I'd still have to pay them in the event the coding doesn't work.

I'm not so sure though. I've had some of my friends change IC in their cars (BMW, Mercedes Sprinter) due to different reasons and if they were lucky and find a really close mileage cluster on eBay, all it took was unplug old and plug in new one; done.

What am I missing? I'm willing to spend 200$ for used cluster but def not 2000$ to get new one from the dealer.

I know at least 1 member replaced his cluster, but he pulled out the chip holding mileage and transfer it to new cluster. Suppose it is quite easy.
Any picture of LED ripped off? Would that be so hard to fix?
