I had to find a new alternative for my Ipod, since the phone console I used is now occupied by an Ipaq. I use the Ipaq with a GPS program to spot Speed Cameras . I now get an early warning with a voice telling me that it's 30 seconds to the camera and the maximum speed limit.

Back to the Ipod.

First: I removed the cup holder. I do not "Drink and Drive" so it was no use for me. When I leave the car, I just pull out the Ipod and close the flip!

Here is how it looks:

Nice!

I use the cupholder on a daily basis so that wouldn't work for me - but it's very clean.

Looks great! I never use the cupholder either so this might be an option as I'm looking for a way to mount my ipod in the car.

Thank you.

I have COMAND, and therefore an AUX input in the glove box.

Pardon my ignorance, but what is an IPOD? Is it an MP3 player?

Here is a picture of my iPod mini in the upper storage compartment of the center console. It is not as elegant as Oslo's but it's neat, accessible and makes good use of the space

Very creative. I like the fact that you can still use your cup holder. What is the "bed" that you used as an insert. Also, I know that my 03' does not have glove box aux, but can my local car audio place get my ipod connected via another rout?

The bed is part of the packaging that the iPod Mini came in. I painted it black with acrylic paint. The rear section is a felt covered platform that I fabricated to hide the wires.

I believe that the only way to pick up an auxillary input on a car that doen't have one is to give up the 6 disc CD changer input. That's not a bad trade considering you can fit up to 1000 songs on the iPod mini.

The cable is a 1/8" stereo headphone cable with a male connector at both ends.

Great photos here!

Oslo, How did you know how to lead the wire through the tunnel? Did you use the disassembly instructions from MBUSAeLearning?

Also was wondering how is the usability and would it be worth the extra mile of having the iPod be powered too through the dock connector cable? Can you see the display from your view of the drivers' seat?

If anybody has any input, please join in!
Thanks

I have my iPod mini powered directly. I picked up the power wires for the 12V outlet in the rear of the center console. Those wires are accessible under the base of the lower console. Be diligent with the volt meter though. There are some low voltage (3V) wires there for the controls on the 4 zone cliamte control system.

The cabling was done by a company that usually works with mounting of mobile phones. There is actually no space to connect power to the docking station, but I have a dual sig outlet in the glove department, so I leave the Ipod there overnight. No problems operating and viewing the Ipod from the driver’s seat.

As said earlier, I’m now retiring my Ipod to my wife’s BMW. I have the DVD drive in the COMAND, and yesterday I found a fantastic program from Roxio (Toast 6 with Jam) that let me burn DVD Music Albums. So now I have burned a DVD disc with 900 tunes. The nice thing is that the COMAND display will show the cover of records while playing. I have managed to remove the interlock that blocks the screen if the speed is above 8 km/h. It’s very easy to navigate, as it builds DVD like menu system. I can make plenty of play lists, with up to 99 tunes in each play list.

Can I download MP3s from my computer to an IPOD or am I only limited to downloading from the ITunes Music Store? I'm new to all these MP3 portable players, so bear with my ignorance.

Absolutely... you can download ripped mp3's/AAC's from your own CD's or aquired elsewhere ;-) The iTunes software makes this painless, in fact it will sync with your PC's music collection everytime you dock your iPod.

Brilliant!

Where is your iPod getting its power from? I don't see the usual cigarette-lighter-adapter eyesore.

How is your iPod connected to your car stereo?

We drive a 2001 ML320, with the standard radio/cassette stereo and were planning to use a cassette adapter, with the cable fed through behind the stereo (I'm going to have to take it out for this).

Any advice in this matter would be highly appreciated.
