Lightbulb What size tyres are needed?

Hi guys,

This is my first post as i have just sold my BMW 330d and purchased a 2003 E270 CDI.

As this is my first Mercedes i don't know much about the wheel setup and i would like to ask a question from people that know about these cars.

At the moment i have the stock 16" alloys with 225/55/16 on both front and rear but i have just purchased some 18" Et35 8.5J Fronts & 9.5J Rear alloys.

My question is what size tyres can i put on them?

I was looking at putting 245/40/18 on the rear and 235/40/18 on the front.

Would this work without any issues?

Thanks for your help and time guys.

A 245 might be stretched a bit on a 9.5" rim. According t0 the following chart: http://www.tyresizecalculator.com/charts/tire-width-for-a-wheel-rim-size-chart 245 is the minimum size for a 9.5" rim, but some tires may not be approved for mounting on that size rim. Every tire is different and you'll have to look at the manufacturer's specs to see. I still wouldn't recommend it as the slight stretch will expose the rim lip to damage, and the likelihood of damaging the sidewall of the tire is greater.

The cars that come stock with this staggered setup from the factory run 245/45/18 up front and 265/35/18 on the rear.

Thanks for your help Andre91.

I just looked at purchasing 245/40/18 on front and 255/35/18 on rear, as the company that sold me the alloys have said that 255 will be fine for the rear on my particular alloy (and getting 245/45 on front and 265/35 on rear will cost me an extra £50).

It may seem a stupid question but that setup should be ok should it? I'm trying to get the best size for the cheapest price as i'm running fast out of money and don't want to make the same mistakes i did on my old car.

I appreciate your help and patience as my questions are probably really rookie ones.

When choosing staggered set up - go on tire manufacturers site and compare rpm of each tire.
Rule of thumb says the car electronics will accept 3% difference, but you want rpm as close as possible.

For the record, don't skim on tyres (tires). If you choose a nice set of wheels cheap tires will only make you send more money in the long term.
It's like buying a new pair of shoes, and used laces.

When it comes to tires, price and value have very loose connection, if any.
I had flatbed truck with Hancock tires. They gave me over 100k miles service, till one blow out of the age (per my assumption).
I bought Sailung tires for 1/4 price of Hancock and they gave me 61k miles.
When selling MB wagon, having it in perfect condition I did not want to sell it with wear out tires, but did not want to spend $1000 for brand tires.
Local tire shop offer me very good price ($260 out door) on set of 17" tires with 50k miles warranty. Chinese tires, but from company I check to be huge tire manufacturer, just not on US market.
When I was skeptic about the warranty, the tires have been very quiet and gave me very good handling for the 1000 miles before sale.

I am running 255/35 R18 in the rear, 235/40 R18 in the front and this set up works well for me.

Thanks for the help guys.

I'm gonna go ahead and do that same setup as S70Houston as he confirms there is no issues. Punching in those sizes with my alloy setup on the 'willtheyfit' calculator seems to work OK when comparing to the stock setup.

Thanks again lads.

S70Houston did not say what tires model he put, while nominal sizes can have huge variety of rpm.
Without checking tech spec you are gambling.
